ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Accountant works under limited supervision performing a variety of accounting duties to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of financial information and reports. This position performs a broad range of accounting duties, including those of a technical, analytical, and complex nature. This includes, but is not limited to, the reconciliation of vendor and general ledger accounts, and supporting the financial planning and reporting process. The Senior Accountant is also a mentor to more junior accountants, is cross trained to perform the various accounting functions, and assists Finance clerical roles with data entry problems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs monthly closings and preparation of financial statements.
- Assists in the annual and monthly financial planning and reporting process, working with the CFO and department leaders (department budget owners).
- Reconciles vendor accounts, which involves working with outside vendors and employees within the organization to ensure all invoices are posted and outstanding issues are resolved.
- Responsible for monthly bank statement reconciliations and ensuring outstanding issues are resolved.
- Monitors and resolves bank issues including fee anomalies.
- Prepares tax computations and returns.
- Prepares and submits payroll remittances for processing.
- Prepares journal entries for monthly and year-end closings.
- Prepares monthly reports for department managers and external stakeholders.
- Reviews invoice batches on a weekly basis and ensures all invoices are posted in a timely manner.
- Ensures all invoices are correctly coded and costed according to budgets.
- Mentors more junior accountants, providing work direction and technical accounting guidance.
- Assists with the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts as required for the annual external audits.
- Reconciles credit card accounts.
- Assist with the annual budget preparation
- Execute intercompany transactions for FMFN and its entities
- Maintain financial reporting for FMFN related entites
- Performs other duties as required.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance.
- Accounting designation (CA, CGA or CMA) is required.
- An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in cost accounting in a computerized accounting environment.
- Knowledge and experience with accounting software such as ACCPAC.
- Experience in a First Nations community is a definite asset.
