ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY..
Position Overview
We are seeking a knowledgeable, motivated, and safety-conscious Scrap Metal Buyer to join our team. In this role, you will be the face of our depot, responsible for evaluating, grading, and purchasing non-ferrous metals from walk-in customers, contractors, and industrial accounts. The ideal candidate possesses a sharp eye for metal identification, strong negotiation skills, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect and Grade: Evaluate incoming scrap metals (copper, aluminum, brass, etc.) to determine exact grade, purity, and value.
- Price and Negotiate: Quote accurate purchase prices to suppliers based on current commodity market rates and depot margins.
- Customer Service: Provide professional, friendly service to a diverse clientele, including public, tradespeople, and commercial vendors.
- Operational Safety: Safely operate scale systems, forklifts, and material handlers to move or weigh incoming inventory.
- Regulatory Compliance: Enforce environmental regulations, anti-theft laws, and depot policies by verifying customer identification and checking for prohibited materials.
- Inventory Documentation: Accurately log transactions, complete purchase receipts, and track physical inventory using depot software.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of experience in scrap metal buying, metal recycling, or a heavy industrial yard environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Proven ability to differentiate quickly between various ferrous and non-ferrous metal alloys and identify contaminants.
- Math & Computer Literacy: Strong basic math skills for weight calculations and comfort using computer-based scale software and point-of-sale systems.
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to handle pricing negotiations firmly and politely.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work on your feet in an outdoor yard environment, endure varying weather conditions, and lift up to 50 lbs.
