Key Responsibilities
The student will contribute to and learn from the media team in the following areas:
Digital & Social Media Support
- Assist in developing, scheduling, and publishing content on social media platforms.
- Help increase the speed and volume of event coverage and athlete storytelling.
- Brainstorm and propose creative ideas to enhance youth-focused engagement.
Website & Online Content
- Support website updates, data uploads, and basic content management tasks.
- Contribute ideas that improve online engagement and accessibility.
Writing & Story Development
- Research, draft, and edit articles for the CPRA website and digital magazine.
- Participate in interviews with athletes, volunteers, and community members.
- Learn best practices in digital storytelling and journalistic writing.
Event & Media Operations Support
- Assist the media team during rodeo events (some evenings/weekends may be required).
- Participate in content planning sessions and learn how live-event media coverage is executed.
Supervision & Mentorship
The student will work under the daily supervision of the CPRA’s Media Department. Mentorship will include:
- Weekly check-ins for skill development and progress review.
- Training in writing, interviewing, digital content creation, and basic media operations.
- Opportunities to receive constructive feedback on work and develop a professional portfolio.
Learning Goals for the Student
By the end of the placement, the student will have gained:
- Practical experience in digital media, journalism, and sports communication.
- Stronger interview, writing, and content-creation skills.
- Experience working in a team environment supporting live events.
- An understanding of how a national sport organization manages media and storytelling.
- Resume-ready work samples and professional references.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants must meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements, including:
- Be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred.
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Skills & Interests:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in digital media, storytelling, journalism, marketing, or sport.
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment during peak event periods.
- Comfortable collaborating with others and taking initiative.
Assets (not required):
- Experience with social media content creation.
- Basic knowledge of website management tools.
- Photography or videography skills.
- Interest in rodeo, agriculture, or rural communities.
Work Environment
- Some evening or weekend work may be required during major rodeo events.
- Travel to events may be required; expenses will be covered.
- Flexible work arrangements may be available depending on location.
