Position Summary
This youth position supports road construction and road maintenance planning for Lethbridge County's rural road network. The Technical Services Field Assistant completes field inspections, collects photos and condition notes, and updates digital records in the County's asset and mapping systems to support maintenance plans, rehabilitation scheduling, and internal road project planning.
The role builds strong technology and digital skills — including mobile data collection, GIS, and GNSS/GPS — and supports agriculture by improving the information used to prioritize rural routes. The position also contributes to environmental protection by documenting drainage performance and erosion or flood risk indicators for follow-up.
Term Contract Dates: tentatively July 6 - August 28, 2026 (35 hours per week)
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Field Inspections & Asset Updates
· Inspect and document municipal assets including roads, signs, culverts, drainage structures, and facilities, and record condition notes and photos.
· Verify asset locations and details in the field; help correct errors and fill data gaps in County records
2. Technology & Digital Skills
· Use mobile apps and tablets to complete digital inspection forms and work logs.
· Update asset information in the County's asset management and GIS systems.
· Organize photos and field records for supervisor review and program documentation.
3. Road Planning & Survey Support (as trained/authorized)
· Assist with GNSS/GPS survey work, basic measurements, and project layout support for internal road projects.
· Support road maintenance and rehabilitation planning by ensuring accurate condition scoring and consistent documentation.
4. Agriculture, Environment & Traffic Data
· Support agriculture and rural access by collecting road and traffic information that helps prioritize key rural routes.
· Document drainage issues — including blocked culverts, erosion/scour, and standing water — for follow-up and resilience planning.
· Assist with traffic count device setup and retrieval and perform basic data checks.
5. Safety, Communication & Team Participation
· Follow County safety procedures, wear required PPE and participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
· Communicate clearly with supervisors and field crews; follow directions and ask questions as needed.
· Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and a willingness to learn.
Education/Training/Skills Required
The ideal candidate will also have:
· Comfort using digital tools such as tablets, smartphones, or computers for data entry and documentation.
· Interest in GIS, GPS/GNSS, mapping, engineering technology, or infrastructure is a strong asset.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to rural field sites.
· Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
· Prior experience with data collection, surveying, or infrastructure inspection is an asset but not required.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a small technical team
· Must have a minimum of a Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.
· A satisfactory 5-year driver’s abstract required.
· Ability to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
