Solve operational puzzles. Build clean systems. Drive real impact.
Do you look at manual, repetitive work and ask, "How can we make this cleaner, faster, and more reliable?"
If you are a problem solver who wants to tackle real-world challenges and have an immediate impact, you'll fit right in at Hutton Safety Group.
About Hutton Safety Group (HSG)
HSG is a Calgary-based fractional safety management firm serving 50+ companies across North America. We support our clients with everything from onboarding systems and digital workflows to full-scale safety programs. We combine practical safety knowledge with modern technology to help companies make better decisions and create a real impact.
The Role & Opportunity
We are seeking an early-career technical professional or self-taught builder who operates with a high degree of agency, curiosity, and practical judgment.
In this role, you will work extensively with our modern low-code and no-code tool stack (including Make.com, Jotform, Google Apps Script, Looker Studio, and APIs) to build, automate, maintain and streamline business processes.
Our technology ecosystem is continuously evolving as our company expands. We are looking for someone who wants to learn and grow their technical knowledge alongside us, helping us refine our current setups and build more scalable, reliable systems over time.
The Mindset We Need
- Self-Motivated: You don't rely on step-by-step instructions. When given an issue or gap to investigate, you gather understanding of the systems at play, ask thoughtful questions, research options, and work to resolve it.
- Pragmatic & Time-Conscious: You know how to best leverage your time and effort given the challenge at hand. You recognize when a manual fix is appropriate versus when a build is required.
- Systems Mindset: You take the extra moment to understand the system you are touching and consider how your changes ripple outward before deploying updates.
- Balanced Autonomy: You drive projects forward independently, but you also recognize when you are stuck. You know when to pause, raise a hand, and ask questions or escalate.
- Collaborative & Considerate: You take ownership of your work, care about the impact your changes have on your peers and clients, and prioritize clear communication.
Our Technical Approach
Our tech team is small and moves fast. You will have real autonomy in how you tackle problems, guided by our approach:
- Understand the Full Picture Before You Move: Investigate requests deeply. Understand the actual root need rather than taking initial requests purely at face value.
- Communicate Proactively: Engage early, keep teammates updated, and raise blockers promptly rather than working in isolation.
- Know the System & Test Rigorously: Because our setup serves multiple client environments, understand what you’re touching and test thoroughly to prevent downstream impacts.
- Improve Intentionally: Leave systems better than you found them, but stay conscious of the maintenance and rollout costs of making broad changes across client accounts.
- Document Decisions & Context: Maintain clear descriptions in project tracking tools and write simple documentation so the team understands what changed and why.
What You’ll Be Doing
You will work within the tech team to enable, support, and build tools for both our internal departments and our clients.
- Workflow Optimization: Configure and refine form logic, automation flows, and business paths using tools like Jotform, Make.com, Google Sheets, and Google Apps Script.
- Integrations & Automation: Connect software platforms using webhooks, APIs, and JSON to ensure data flows smoothly across systems.
- System Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Investigate integration issues, troubleshoot technical hiccups (API failures, authentication errors), and improve system reliability.
- Reporting & Dashboards: Help create and maintain live dashboards (e.g., Looker Studio) to turn operational data into clear, actionable insights.
- Practical AI Workflows: Assist in testing and implementing focused AI tools where they genuinely improve operational efficiency or data verification.
- Documentation: Write clear, concise internal notes and user guides so system builds are easy to operate and maintain.
What We’re Looking For
- Educational Foundation: A degree, diploma, or practical background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline (new grads welcome!).
- Technical Aptitude: Familiarity with web integration concepts (APIs, webhooks, JSON), low-code/no-code platforms (Make.com/Zapier), spreadsheets, or light scripting (Apps Script, JavaScript, Python).
- Logical Thinking: Ability to visually map out workflow logic ("if X happens, trigger Y") and trace where a process breaks.
- Clear Communication: Ability to explain technical concepts simply to non-technical teammates.
- Web Development: Knowledge of web frameworks such as React, Angular, and Postgres is a plus
