ABOUT THE ROLE
As Field Supervisor – Locates, you will lead a team of Utility Locators in the field, making sure work is completed safely, on time, and to the standard our utility partners expect. You will coordinate daily field operations, mentor locators on the ground, handle the toughest locates yourself, and serve as the first point of escalation when a site gets complicated.
This is a working supervisory role for an experienced locator who is ready to lead. You will set the example, hold the standard, and keep your team compliant with LAC guidelines, Ontario One Call requirements, and utility-owner standards every day.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise, coach, and support a team of field Utility Locators day to day
- Coordinate daily workload, scheduling, and dispatch to meet turnaround commitments
- Perform and validate complex and high-priority locates personally
- Serve as the first escalation point for difficult sites, conflicts, and field questions
- Ensure all locates meet LAC guidelines, Ontario One Call requirements, utility-owner standards, and damage prevention legislation
- Interpret Ontario One Call tickets and job orders, and manage ticket flow across the team
- Verify infrastructure using utility maps, as-builts, GIS systems, and engineering drawings
- Monitor field quality, documentation, and safety practices, and correct issues on the spot
- Coordinate with contractors, site foremen, municipalities, and utility owners to support safe excavation
- Support onboarding of new locators alongside the training team
- Safeguard and maintain company vehicles, locating equipment, and tools
- Promote and maintain a strong safety-first culture on all job sites
QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior hands-on utility locating experience is required — you must have personally performed locates
- In-depth knowledge of LAC guidelines, industry standards, and applicable regulations is required
- Strong understanding of Ontario utility locating practices and damage prevention legislation
- Proven experience locating gas, hydro, telecom, fiber optic, water, and sewer infrastructure
- Advanced proficiency with electromagnetic (EM) locating methods
- Strong ability to interpret utility maps, as-builts, engineering drawings, and GIS data
- Experience working within Ontario One Call ticketing systems
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and sound decision-making in field environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated, with the ability to lead a team and manage workload efficiently
- Valid Full G Driver's License with a clean driver's abstract
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous supervisory, lead hand, or crew leadership experience
- Knowledge of LAC accreditation requirements
- Experience operating Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
- ORCGA Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) Certification
- Health & Safety certifications
- Experience with GPS/GIS and mapping platforms
- Strong attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal job sites
- Urban and rural terrain including construction zones, gravel, ditches, and uneven surfaces
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Travel across the assigned Ontario service area
- Overtime and occasional weekend work as required
