Nakoda Elementary School is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Drama Teacher to lead an exciting Kindergarten–Grade 5 performing arts program unlike any other.

About the Role
As our Drama Teacher, you will design and deliver a comprehensive performing arts program that grows with students from Kindergarten through Grade 5.
Rather than focusing solely on theatrical productions, the program emphasizes creativity, communication, collaboration, and confidence through developmentally appropriate experiences.
Kindergarten–Grade 2
Young learners explore drama through:
- Dramatic play
- Puppetry
- Singing and music
- Rhythm and movement
- Storytelling
- Readers Theatre
- Character exploration
- Oral language development
Grades 3–5
Older students expand their skills through:
- Acting and improvisation
- Playbuilding
- Script writing
- Theatre production
- Vocal performance
- Sound design
- Movement and choreography
- Leadership in performance
Throughout every grade, students experience opportunities to connect learning with Stoney Nakoda storytelling traditions, seasonal teachings, outdoor learning, and Indigenous ways of knowing, developed respectfully in collaboration with Elders and community members.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Deliver engaging Kindergarten–Grade 5 drama instruction.
- Integrate music, rhythm, movement, puppetry, and storytelling into lessons.
- Foster creativity, confidence, collaboration, and communication.
- Support literacy development through dramatic expression and oral language.
- Plan age-appropriate performances and celebrations throughout the school year.
- Organize signature school events, including performances and drama showcases.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to connect drama with literacy, social studies, science, and other curricular areas.
- Work collaboratively with Educational Assistants, school staff, Elders, and community members.
- Create an inclusive, safe, and encouraging learning environment where every student feels successful.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- Alberta Teacher Certification (or eligibility for certification).
- A passion for drama, theatre, music, or performing arts education.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
- A collaborative and creative approach to teaching.
The following would be considered strong assets:
- Theatre or drama education experience
- Music or vocal instruction
- Puppetry
- Dance or movement education
- Indigenous education experience
- Outdoor education
- Readers Theatre and literacy integration
- Production, directing, or stage management experience
