We are seeking a Summer Garden Project Assistant to work for eight weeks from July 2 – August 31. Work will take place in school gardens in Sooke, Colwood, Langford and Saanich. This is a staff position to work 30-35 hours per week at $22/hour.
Job Responsibilities
- Support the maintenance of school yard gardens in Sooke School District.
- Support and help to collaboratively develop a summer garden work experience program for high school aged youth.
- Develop hands-on learning opportunities and encourage high school youth to develop projects and take leadership in the care of their schoolyard gardens through the summer.
- Support year-round staff in hosting youth at Esquimalt Farmers Market farm stand.
- Regularly liaise with other school garden support staff in the organization to ensure school gardens are well maintained.
- Support harvest and preservation of school grown produce.
- Other school garden development work as directed.
Qualifications / Skills
- Must be 30 years old or younger (this is a requirement of the funding supporting this position).
- Strong leadership abilities and communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Knowledge and experience with caretaking the land, especially cultivating vegetables and/or supporting native ecosystem restoration.
- Motivated self-starter able to work independently and as part of a complex team.
- Experience facilitating programming for children and/or youth.
- Anti-oppression values and commitment to decolonization.
- Have reliable transportation to get to and from school garden sites across the region.
Pay: From $22.00 per hour
