Assistant Store Manager – Canada in a Basket
Location: ByWard Market, Ottawa, ON
Position: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience + performance incentives
About Us
Canada in a Basket is one of Ottawa’s premier souvenir and gift retailers, proudly serving visitors and locals in the heart of the ByWard Market. Operating two busy retail locations, we specialize in uniquely Canadian gifts, apparel, Indigenous products, maple products, and Ottawa-themed merchandise.
We are looking for an energetic, organized, and customer-focused Assistant Store Manager to help oversee daily operations of both stores and support continued growth.
What You’ll Do
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and motivate a team of retail associates
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance management
- Create and manage staff schedules
- Foster a positive, accountable, and customer-focused culture
- Serve as manager-on-duty when ownership is absent
Store Operations
- Oversee daily operations of two retail locations
- Ensure stores are clean, organized, stocked, and visually appealing
- Open and close stores as required
- Handle cash management, deposits, and POS operations
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering and receiving merchandise
Customer Experience
- Deliver exceptional customer service
- Resolve customer concerns professionally and efficiently
- Support sales initiatives and team performance goals
- Help maintain high online review ratings and customer satisfaction
Inventory & Merchandising
- Track inventory and identify replenishment needs
- Assist with product displays and merchandising strategies
- Coordinate stock transfers between locations
- Support seasonal merchandising and new product launches
Qualifications
- Previous retail management or supervisory experience
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Bilingual (English/French) is strongly preferred
- Experience with inventory management and retail POS systems is an asset
