The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Located in Enterprise, and reporting to the Highway Transport Officer 111, this position monitors the safe movement of commercial vehicles on the NWT highway system primarily in the South Slave region. The Highway Transport Officer II operates a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility and conducts mobile patrols to ensure compliance by commercial vehicle traffic with NWT transport legislation. Commercial vehicle safety inspections must be completed to a high standard by the Highway Transport Officer 11, to protect all road users and reduce accidents on our highways.
The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are:

Knowledge of the Motor Vehicles Act, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, Hours of Service Regulations, Large Vehicle Control Regulations, Driver License Regulations, Motor Vehicle Equipment Regulations, and inspection standards under the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Agreement.

Knowledge of mechanical systems in large commercial vehicles

Knowledge of traffic enforcement practices, including road safety and commercial vehicle compliance.

Knowledge of the justice system, including rules of evidence, court procedures, and enforcement authority to properly conduct investigations and enforcement proceedings.

Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including report writing and preparation of documents.
Typically attained by
A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience in the motor carrier industry.
Additional Requirements -

Class 3 driver¿s license with air brake endorsement.

No driver¿s license suspensions, prohibitions, or cancellations within the past three (3) years.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Inspector designation within one (1) year of appointment.

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) North American Safety Inspector (NASI) Level 1 certification designation within one (1) year of appointment.
