Construction Estimator
Jon Witzel Contracting Ltd. is seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to join our growing team. This position is responsible for preparing accurate, detailed, and competitive estimates for high-end residential, agricultural, and commercial construction projects.
The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, designers, clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and consultants to develop comprehensive project budgets and proposals while ensuring every estimate reflects our commitment to quality, accuracy, and value.
While estimating experience is preferred, Jon Witzel Contracting Ltd. is willing to train the right candidate who possesses the appropriate education, strong technical aptitude, and a genuine passion for construction. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare complete and accurate cost estimates for residential, agricultural, and commercial construction projects.
- Review architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and engineering drawings, specifications, and project documentation to fully understand project scope and requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs for all phases of construction, including site servicing, excavation, concrete, structural framing, building envelope, interior & exterior finishes, and specialty items.
- Solicit, review, and analyze quotations from subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturers to ensure complete and competitive pricing.
- Prepare detailed scopes of work for subcontractor tender packages to ensure consistent and accurate pricing.
- Compare quotations for completeness and identify discrepancies, exclusions, or value engineering opportunities.
- Develop comprehensive project budgets by compiling material costs, subcontractor pricing, labour, equipment, allowances, contingencies, and overhead.
- Prepare professional client proposals, tender submissions, cost breakdowns, and supporting documentation.
- Identify project risks, constructability concerns, and cost-saving opportunities during the estimating process.
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers, Coordinators and Designers during pre-construction planning and project handoff.
- Attend site visits, client meetings, and project walkthroughs as required.
- Maintain and update estimating databases, supplier pricing, labour rates, production rates, and historical project costing information.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and clients.
- Communicate professionally with homeowners, architects, engineers, municipalities, suppliers, and subcontractors throughout the estimating process.
- Stay current with market pricing, material trends, labour availability, and construction methods.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience.
- Previous estimating experience in residential, commercial, or agricultural construction is preferred; however, we are willing to train the right candidate with relevant post-secondary education, strong technical skills, and a willingness to learn.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and building systems from excavation through project completion.
- Thorough knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, construction techniques, and building science principles.
- Ability to accurately interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and engineering drawings and specifications.
- Experience preparing detailed quantity take-offs and comprehensive project estimates is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of material pricing, labour productivity, subcontractor coordination, and project budgeting.
- Proficient in Bluebeam Revu, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and computerized estimating software.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple estimates and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and committed to continuous improvement.
- Must have valid driver's licence with reliable transportation to the office daily.
