Job Overview
The Centre for Early Learning and Development is seeking a visionary Early Childhood Assistant Director to lead its high-quality preschool program and to encourage young minds to pursue the wonder and excitement of their magical learning journey.
The successful candidate will provide administrative and operational support to the Program Director, coordinate program initiatives, and help ensure the Centre meets or exceeds regulatory standards and Centre’s expectations.
This is a hybrid role blending program management support with active, hands-on classroom engagement. The Assistant Director will divide their time between administrative leadership alongside the Director and direct engagement on the floor with the children and educators.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Administrative & Program Management Support
Provide high-level operational support to the Director across compliance, curriculum implementation, and staff development. Oversee program quality control, regulatory standards, and stakeholder communications. You will build partnerships in the community with other non-profit organizations and will position the Centre as the leader in early childhood educational programming that cultivates wonder, joy and confidence in children.
- Curriculum & Resource Development: Assist the Director in creating, updating, and distributing curriculum materials, operational policies, and staff training resources.
- Compliance & Quality Standards: Maintain comprehensive knowledge of provincial licensing regulations, track quality assurance data, and manage program compliance records to ensure high organizational standards. You will ensure that the Centre meets and operates within the requirements of all applicable Alberta licensing laws and regulations, funding streams and reporting requirements.
- Training & Professional Development: You are motivated to lead your staff to reach their full potential, you have experience as an instructional leader, mentor and coach and support their continual growth. Coordinate and conduct workshops, training sessions, and orientation programs for educators. You will build relationships with staff, assist them in accessing opportunities for professional growth, and create a culture of respect, engagement and two-way communication.
- Stakeholder & Partner Support: Serve as a key point of contact for families and staff, responding efficiently to inquiries regarding program, policies, enrollment process and resources.
- Program Monitoring & Evaluation: Observe classroom operations and provide constructive feedback to staff to drive consistency and excellence.
- Reporting & Communications: Prepare clear reports, presentations, newsletters and ongoing communications for organizational leaders, community partners, and family stakeholders.
- Special Initiatives: Lead and collaborate on strategic projects aimed at elevating educational quality, program delivery, and strengthening family relationships.
Classroom Leadership and Direct Engagement
You see children as capable and love being part of their unique developmental paths and value diversity and equity and are responsive to differences in families’ backgrounds and needs.
In this role, you will engage on the floor, hands-on play with children and work with families as an active partner in the educational and developmental growth of children. You will be active in the classroom indoors/outdoors and at events and will create regular and meaningful connections with the Centre families.
- Active Engagement: Spend dedicated time on the floor actively engaging, playing, leading project-based learning and co-learning alongside children in a nurturing, hands-on environment.
- Observation and Documentation: Observe and document children’s learning journey through pedagogical documentation. Create and share children’s explorations, experiences and reflections through visual maps created with children that record their initial questions, existing knowledge, and evolving ideas about a topic, learning stories and individual learning portfolios.
- Child Development & Wellbeing: Support the social, emotional, creative, physical and cognitive growth of each child by building positive relationships and ensuring a safe, stimulating space.
- Classroom Support: Partner directly with classroom educators to mentor staff, model standard-setting teaching practices, and foster a dynamic learning environment.
Education & Certification:
- Degree or Diploma in Early Childhood Education (or related to human services field).
- Solid background in Flight curriculum, and experience in Reggio Emilia approach and project-based early childhood education.
- Valid Government of Alberta Early Childhood Educator Certification (Level 3 / Child Development Supervisor)
- Valid Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.
- Clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (issued within 6 months)
- Intervention Record Check
Skills & Experience.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in childcare management, education, program coordination, have experience in developing budgets and identifying short and long-term financial needs. Advancement, marketing and public relations experience and at least three years of relevant professional experience are preferred.
- Strong familiarity with Flight: Alberta Early Learning and Care Framework and Reggio inspired practice. Passionate and knowledgeable about best practices in early childhood education.
- Excellent human relations skills: families, staff, students and the community at large.
- You are a relationship builder and enjoy interacting with families and the community.
- Exceptional collaboration, active listening, and communication skills.
