Position Overview
Discover Grand Forks is seeking two enthusiastic and community-minded individuals to join our team for the summer as Tourism Information Officer / Marketing & Events Assistants. These roles are ideal for individuals interested in tourism, marketing, events, and community engagement.
This is a dynamic, hands-on position that takes you out into the community—engaging with visitors, supporting local events, and helping showcase everything Grand Forks has to offer.
These two positions will work as a team, with students sometimes working together at events and activations, and at other times working independently in the field or on assigned projects.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Services & Tourism Promotion
- Engage with visitors throughout Grand Forks, including the Market District, trails, and recreation sites
- Provide directions, maps, local insights, and travel recommendations
- Promote local restaurants, accommodations, attractions, and experiences
- Distribute tourism materials and act as a welcoming ambassador for the community
- Gather tourism materials and brochures, and work with local visitor centres, businesses, and attractions to ensure up-to-date information is available for distribution
Community Outreach & Events
- Set up and staff a Discover Grand Forks booth at the weekly Farmers Market
- Rove downtown and key visitor areas to assist tourists
- Attend and support local events, including the Farmers & Crafters Market
- Assist with the coordination, setup, and teardown of community events, including:
- Music on Market Fest
- Canada Day celebrations
Marketing & Content Creation
- Create and publish engaging social media content (photo and video) highlighting local events, businesses, trails, and attractions
- Assist with filming and editing promotional videos
- Contribute to maintaining and updating the Discover Grand Forks website, including blog posts and event listings
Research & Administration
- Conduct visitor surveys to support tourism data collection and economic impact analysis
- Assist with administrative tasks related to the Grand Forks Ambassador Program
- Develop and distribute a weekly “What’s Going On in Grand Forks” update (email + printed copies) to local businesses, accommodations, and tourism locations
- Liaise regularly with local businesses and community partners
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Friendly, outgoing, and comfortable engaging with the public
- Interest in tourism, marketing, events, or community development
- Experience (or willingness to learn) social media content creation and basic video editing
- Organized, reliable, and able to work independently or collaboratively
- Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Strong knowledge of Grand Forks and the surrounding area, including things to do, places to visit, and local experiences
- Training will be provided, but candidates should already have a good understanding of the Grand Forks tourism scene to confidently answer visitor questions
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is someone who is energetic, approachable, and genuinely passionate about Grand Forks. You enjoy meeting new people, telling stories, and helping visitors discover great experiences. You are equally comfortable chatting with tourists at a market booth, filming a quick social media video, or pitching in behind the scenes at a community event.
You take initiative, are dependable, and can work both independently and as part of a small team. A natural curiosity about local businesses, events, and outdoor activities will help you succeed in this role.
Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs)
Applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee protection
