A commercial graphic installer applies vinyl wraps, decals, and large-format signage to surfaces like vehicle fleets, storefronts, and interior walls. This hands-on, physically demanding role requires precision, physical stamina, and a keen eye for detail to ensure graphics are properly aligned, smooth, and free of bubbles or wrinkles.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation: Thoroughly clean, de-grease, and prepare surfaces (glass, metal, drywall) to ensure proper vinyl adhesion.
- Application & Installation: Precisely measure, align, and apply computer-cut or printed vinyl graphics, banners, and full or partial wraps.
- Material Shaping: Use heat guns and specialty squeegees to stretch and mold vinyl over complex vehicle curves or architectural contours.
- Removal: Safely strip and remove old graphics or adhesive residues without damaging the underlying paint or surface.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect finished installations for quality control, verifying alignment and adherence to exact project specifications.
- Travel & On-Site Work: Travel to client locations (e.g., construction sites, corporate offices, retail spaces) to perform installations, sometimes requiring the use of ladders or scissor lifts.
Job Requirements
- Physical & Spatial Abilities: Must have excellent hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and the ability to stand, bend, and lift heavy materials.
- Basic Math & Measurement: Strong ability to read tape measures and precisely align layouts to client mock-ups.
- Tools of the Trade: Comfort using hand tools, specialty knives, heat guns, and large-format finishing equipment (e.g., laminators).
- Driver’s License: A valid driver's license (often a clean Class 5 in Alberta) and the ability to drive company vehicles to job sites.
- Industry Accreditations: Many employers prefer—or require—previous experience with major film manufacturers like 3M or Avery Dennison, and the ability to operate aerial lifts.
- Soft Skills: Problem-solving ability for unexpected field issues, strong time-management to meet tight project deadlines, and professional customer service skills.
