Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, this role provides strategic legal support on a broad range of advertising, consumer protection, ecommerce and regulatory matters. This is an exciting opportunity to partner closely with business leaders in a fast-paced retail environment and advise on innovative customer-facing initiatives, marketing campaigns, emerging technologies and complex regulatory issues. The ideal candidate will have 7 – 10 years of corporate/commercial/regulatory experience at an in-house legal department and/or a leading law firm. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting exciting growth initiatives across a number of cross-functional business units, including marketing, ecommerce and technology
- Providing practical legal advice in complex regulatory areas such as marketing, consumer protection, privacy and ecommerce
- Advising on advertising campaigns, marketing materials, loyalty and promotional programs, influencer and social media initiatives, pricing and disclosure practices, and customer-facing communications
- Leading the negotiation of a variety of strategic commercial agreements, including marketing, technology, SaaS, data, agency and vendor agreements
- Monitoring legal and regulatory developments and advising business teams on emerging risks and industry trends impacting retail, ecommerce and marketing practices
- Managing external counsel efficiently and effectively where engaged
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, including the development of scalable legal processes, templates and operational efficiencies within the legal department
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 – 10 years of corporate/commercial/regulatory experience at an in-house legal department and/or leading law firm.
- Strong experience advising on advertising, marketing, consumer protection, ecommerce and/or regulatory compliance matters
- Experience supporting retail, consumer-facing, technology or digital commerce businesses is considered an asset
- Experience advising on privacy, CASL and data governance matters is considered an asset
- Exceptional drafting, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to provide concise, practical legal advice to business stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership
- Strong business judgment, commercial acumen and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and work cross-functionally with legal and business partners
LLB/JD and membership in good standing with a Canadian law society
