About the Program
The MD Program at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) offers an exciting opportunity for (Principles of Medicine) PoM Technicians to support first-year medical students as they navigate the Foundations Phase (Phase 1) of their education. The team is dedicated to delivering a dynamic and hands-on approach to anatomy education through the Principles of Medicine course. Working alongside clinical faculty and course facilitators, PoM Technicians will play a pivotal role in facilitating lab activities, ensuring the safe operation of anatomy labs, and providing technical support for students. This position is integral to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment that emphasizes both foundational anatomy knowledge and professional lab practices. The Department of Medical Education is committed to fostering an engaging and collaborative educational atmosphere, making this a key role within TMU’s innovative and forward-thinking MD program.
The opportunity
The MD Program at TMU is seeking skilled and detail-oriented professionals to serve as PoM Technicians supporting first-year and second-year medical students of the MD Program. PoM Technicians will provide operational, laboratory, and in-class technology support, working closely with clinical faculty and course facilitators to ensure that anatomy laboratory sessions run safely and efficiently for students enrolled in:
Principles of Medicine (MED101 and MED201)
In this role, PoM Technicians will help maintain a safe, organized, and supportive laboratory environment that emphasizes safe lab practices, professional conduct, and the effective use of anatomy equipment and technology. The PoM Technician will prepare laboratory spaces, operate and troubleshoot in-class technology, and provide technical support and advice to students and clinical faculty regarding lab equipment. The position reports to the Manager of UGME. PoM Technicians will receive orientation and training in Summer 2026 and support in-person sessions from September 2026 to June 2027.
Time Commitment:
Principles of Medicine (MED101) – Anatomy: 9 hours on Thursdays
Course Schedule: Thursdays, 8:00–12:00 p.m.; Thursdays, 1:00–5:00 p.m.
- Principles of Medicine (MED201) – Anatomy: 9 hours on Tuesdays
- Course Schedule: Tuesdays 8:00–12:00 p.m.; Tuesdays 1:00–5:00 p.m.
Key Responsibilities:
- Anatomy Lab Preparation: Sets up, organizes, and maintains anatomy laboratory environments, including equipment, lab coats, anatomical models, digital platforms, technology, supplies, and laboratory materials.
- Technical Support: Provides in-class technology support to clinical faculty, course facilitators, and students during anatomy laboratory sessions. Supports the safe and appropriate use of anatomical models, digital learning tools, audiovisual systems, and other laboratory technology. Troubleshoots equipment and technology issues as they arise.
- Operational Support: Ensures that all required laboratory materials, equipment, and technology are prepared, functional, and available before each session. Supports room set-up, equipment placement, inventory management, cleaning, storage, and post-session reset activities.
- Equipment and Technology Support: Operates, monitors, and maintains anatomy laboratory equipment and in-class technology. Provides guidance on the correct and safe use of equipment and assists with identifying equipment, technology, or material requirements for upcoming sessions.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensures that all laboratory activities and operations are conducted in accordance with TMU health, safety, accessibility, infection prevention, and privacy regulations. Identifies and reports equipment concerns, safety risks, or operational issues through the appropriate processes.
- Collaboration: Works closely with the Associate Director, Curriculum, the Director, Clinical Anatomy and Simulation Lab, anatomy course facilitators, and curriculum team members to coordinate laboratory operations, equipment requirements, room preparation, and technical support.
- Professionalism: Models respectful and inclusive behaviour and helps maintain an equitable, professional, and supportive laboratory environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
Qualifications
- Prior experience working in an academic, healthcare, simulation, technology-supported learning, or anatomy laboratory setting is considered an asset.
- Experience preparing and maintaining laboratory environments, anatomical equipment, digital anatomy platforms, audiovisual systems, or other classroom technology.
- Strong technical, organizational, communication, troubleshooting, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage multiple operational tasks and respond effectively to equipment or technology issues during scheduled laboratory sessions.
- Commitment to maintaining inclusive, respectful, safe, and supportive learning spaces.
- Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Additional Information:
- Compensation: $50 per hour for in-person instructional time. Payment will be processed biweekly.
- Training: PoM Technicians will be required to attend orientation and professional development sessions in Summer 2026 to become familiar with lab operations, technology, and expectations.
- Student Feedback: Students will provide feedback through formal evaluations, which will be shared with the PoM Technician and the Associate Director, Curriculum.
