We’re hiring a Dining Room Sommelier to join our world class team at Hastings House Country House Hotel, a luxury all-inclusive Relais & Chateaux Resort, in the unspoiled Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Located on Salt Spring Island, Hastings House is a bucolic location accessed by three BC Ferry routes, one from Vancouver and two from Vancouver Island.

Position Summary
The Dining Room Sommelier will have a passion for excellence in guest service, experience in developing wine programs and extensive knowledge of wines and wine pairings. They will assist with direction and of the Hastings House wine program including supervising and training, direct reports on wine program and ensuring a world class fine dining experience for our guests.
Job Duties
- Set expectations and hold the team accountable for demonstrating desired service behaviors in accordance with Relais and Chateaux expectations.
- Manage the wine cellar and ensure its fully stocked.
- Manage reservations and floor plans.
- Greet and seat guests.
- Assist with managing the floor or expediting when needed.
- Edit, print and ensure menus are current.
- Assist with monthly inventory.
- POS programming and reporting.
- Ensure all daily and weekly cleaning tasks are completed and up to standards.
- Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the dining room and stations.
- Knowledgeable of all regular and special menu items as well as any changes daily.
- Able to read service tickets and deliver food to the correct seat numbers.
- Assist bartenders with service and stocking duties.
- Physically demanding and repetitive tasks, handling heavy loads, combination of sitting, walking, standing for extended periods of time, bending, crouching, kneeling.
- Work closely with the General Manager to create, curate and execute all aspects of the beverage program.
- Strong fundamental knowledge of:
- Wine varieties, regions, and origins
- Contents of the Hastings Housewine cellar
- Current market values
- Spirits and cocktails
Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience in fine dining service
- 1-2 years of supervisory experience, preferably in a fine dining setting.
- High School Diploma required. Any additional education or experience in the Hospitality, Tourism, or related fields would be an asset.
- Experience working with a POS system.
- WSET qualifications, 1, 2 and 3 or Court of Sommelier, ISG Sommelier certification required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of wine, spirits and alcohol.
- Must be fluent in English, second language an asset.
- First Aid certificates are an asset.
- Must have a valid serving it right number.
- Applicant must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Island Life
- Staff can be provided with subsidized single bedroom accommodations. Complimentary wifi and cable TV are provided in each staff room.
- Staff accommodation is within walking distance of the hotel as well as the town of Ganges
- Staff meals and beverages provided from our Staff Kitchen
- Shift work is required from April until November, with the possibility of extending into December; employees are expected to be flexible in their scheduling to meet the needs of the business.
