Instrumentation and Monitoring (I&M) Specialist
Greater Toronto Area
SUMMARY
The I&M Specialist is responsible for the real-time surveillance and proactive analysis of geotechnical and structural instrumentation monitoring data. The individual will manage a sophisticated suite of instrumentation to ensure site safety, data integrity, and operational continuity. A core component of this role is the ability to make timely assessments and communicate effectively with stakeholders beyond the reliance on automated alerts. The successful candidate must possess the technical expertise to distinguish between false readings (sensor drift/noise) and true geotechnical movement, ensuring that communication and responses are both accurate and rapid.
PRIMARY SCOPE OF ROLE
- Maintain continuous oversight of automated platforms tracking various geotechnical and structural instruments including but not limited to ground monitoring points, utility points, vibrating wire (VW) piezometers, VW load cells, tiltmeters, electrolevel (EL) beams, and inclinometers.
- Perform immediate "immediate" interpretation of incoming alerts to distinguish between noise and genuine structural movement by considering various factors.
- Escalading true exceedances and engaging stakeholders through project specific response action plan protocols.
- Issue formal notifications and concise technical briefings to site engineers and stakeholders regarding data anomalies and trend forecasts.
- Basic understanding of electrical circuits to diagnose various sensor issues
- Utilize various monitoring data visualization platforms to monitor site health via overview plans, plots, and data.
- Conduct deep-dive analysis of data trends to identify emerging patterns, providing proactive recommendations to mitigate potential failures before they reach trigger levels.
- Synthesize information across disparate instrument types.
- Provide required plots and data as input for monitoring reports.
- Regularly review alarm configurations and assess their functionality
- Maintain the flexibility to work on active construction sites and perform detailed physical inspections.
- Conduct routine reviews of sensor health to proactively identify "drifting" or failing instruments, coordinating with site teams for calibration or replacement.
- Maintain rigorous records of site activities, instrument calibrations, and compliance logs.
- Proactively suggest dashboard optimizations and visualization enhancements to improve the response time and clarity.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in related Engineering or data sciences field.
- Expert ability to distinguish between sensor noise/false positives and genuine geotechnical movement.
- Good IT background with knowledge of data acquisition systems, server configurations, and database management for monitoring platforms.
- Candidates must be available to support project needs through a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holiday shifts as required.
- Technical understanding of electrical components, signal processing, and the mechanics of vibrating wire technology, inclinometer profiles, and surveyed points.
- Proven experience in data analysis and predictive modeling.
- Ability to work on active construction sites to perform physical inspections and verify sensor installations against digital readings.
- Must be available to support a 24/7 "Integrated Operations" schedule, including nights, weekends, and holiday shifts to ensure continuous site safety.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and make decisive, data-driven assessments during "Review" and "Alert" scenarios.
- Skilled at translating complex, high-volume data sets into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
- Able to travel periodically to remote job locations for select assignments.
