We are a boutique criminal defence law firm looking for a junior criminal defence lawyer to join our team.
The salary will be based on experience and is reviewed annually.
The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in criminal defence, strong critical thinking skills, and an eagerness to learn. We are a teaching firm, and much of our practice is built around lawyers learning from and working with one another. Our partners and senior lawyers regularly mentor junior lawyers, articling students and summer students.
The successful candidate will have carriage of a caseload of smaller files from start to finish, with the assistance of students for set-date court matters. On more complex files and trials, the junior lawyer will work alongside senior counsel.
We meet bi-weekly to check in on each other's files, discuss legal issues and share developments in criminal law. We take pride in the community we have created within the firm and value lawyers who are willing to contribute to that environment.
Office space is assigned to each lawyer, but we offer a hybrid work arrangement for those who prefer to work from home when appropriate.
Applicants should:
- Have a strong interest in criminal defence;
- LSO licensed and in good standing;
- 0-2 years call;
- Be critical thinkers who view the practice of law as a means of achieving systemic change while representing clients;
- Have strong written and oral communication skills;
- Be comfortable working independently on smaller files while working alongside senior counsel on more complex matters;
- Have good judgment, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
Fluency in French and having a valid driver's licence with access to a vehicle are both considered valuable assets.
