Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Construction to oversee all construction operations across WDI Group's portfolio.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge in construction management, project oversight, and team leadership, maintaining high-quality standards throughout the construction process. They will lead project teams, manage budgets and timelines, ensure compliance and safety, and drive operational excellence across all active sites. This role requires a strategic thinker with deep construction expertise and a passion for building high-performing teams.
This position is primarily based in Southern Ontario, with occasional out-of-province travel required for project oversight across Canada and the USA.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to the construction division.
- Align construction operations with company goals and growth initiatives.
- Champion a culture of safety, quality, and accountability.
Project Oversight
- Organize, oversee and participate in the execution of multiple construction projects, primarily in Southern Ontario, with occasional oversight of national and U.S.-based projects.
- Participate in meetings, prepare minutes and site review documentation as necessary
- Coordinate as necessary with other WDI teams.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to WDI’s quality standards.
- Resolve escalated issues related to design, permitting, procurement, and construction.
Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and support project managers, project coordinators, site supervisors, and subcontractors (trades).
- Build a strong internal talent pipeline and foster a collaborative team environment.
Financial & Contract Management
- Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost controls.
- Ensure GP targets are met or exceeded on each project
- Negotiate and manage contracts with subcontractors, consultants, and suppliers.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all project aspects using our construction ERP system and document storage system.
Risk & Compliance
- Ensure all projects comply with local, provincial/state, and federal regulations.
- Oversee health and safety programs and ensure adherence to best practices.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary liaison between construction, development, design, and executive teams.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and regulatory bodies.
- Communicate promptly and professionally with the WDI team, clients, and subtrades.
Travel Requirements
- Regularly visit active project sites for project coordination and oversight.
Qualifications
- Valid Ontario driver’s license
- Consistently professional in appearance and conduct.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in construction management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Results focused, with a proven track record of building enduring client relationships.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and U.S. construction codes, permitting processes, and safety standards.
- Solid grasp of project accounting and gross profit principles.
- Proven experience managing large-scale commercial or institutional projects, with experience in successfully managing multiple $1,000,000+ projects simultaneously
- Proficient with Office365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Word, and Excel.
- Proficiency in project management and other ERP software (e.g., Sage Construction Management (Corecon), Procore, Bluebeam).
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-driven, detail-oriented, adaptable, able to work well under pressure and thrive in a team environment.
- PMP, Gold Seal, or LEED certification is an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field is an asset
