The Integrated Operations Center (IOC) is the first of its kind in Alberta Health Services, situated in the Edmonton Zone. The IOC is the air traffic control center of our acute system bringing together clinicians and data to support proactive, real-time decisions for patient movement across the health zone. The IOC monitors flow and bottles necks across the system, triggering actions or escalations, understanding the crucial relationship between technology and decision making to deliver high-quality patient services. This position works with a primary focus on patient flow and quality across the care continuum and with staff and leaders at many levels of the organization. The Corridor Patient Flow and System Coordination Specialist supports the zone’s integrated operations center (IOC) at a centralized location, working collaboratively to monitor and continuously improve the zones proactive discharge model and operational targets and strategies as we work to support the day-to-day operations and patient flow business rules in the zone. The position provides key facilitation and monitoring to the zone leadership and sites during regular and non-regular business hours in the 24/7 operations center. In this position, you will work with a team of Corridor Patient Flow and System Coordination Specialist in the daily operations of the IOC. Description:
The Edmonton Corridor Patient Flow and System Coordination Specialist is a key member of the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), a centralized operational hub supporting patient flow, access, and capacity management across hospitals within the Edmonton Health Corridor. Working in a dynamic 24/7 environment, the Specialist provides system-level coordination and expertise in patient flow, hospital transfers, repatriation, complex care transitions, and capacity management. The role partners with acute care sites, physicians, operational leaders, multidisciplinary teams, Emergency Health Services (EHS), RAAPID, and community organizations to facilitate timely patient movement and support access to care. The Specialist coordinates and escalates complex patient situations requiring multi-site collaboration, supports corridor-wide situational awareness, and contributes to operational decision-making through real-time problem-solving and effective communication. Responsibilities include monitoring capacity pressures, transfer activity, discharge barriers, and repatriation opportunities to optimize patient flow and resource utilization. Using operational data, quality improvement principles, and Connect Care workflows, the Specialist supports safe, timely, and patient-centred transitions throughout the acute care continuum. The role also contributes to the ongoing optimization of patient flow processes and technology-enabled solutions that enhance operational performance. Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in a health profession. Minimum five (5) years of recent healthcare experience in acute care, patient flow, care coordination, discharge planning, operational leadership, demand-capacity management, or related clinical environments. Demonstrated experience coordinating complex patient situations across multiple programs, services, or organizations. Strong facilitation, leadership, organizational, and relationship-building skills. Proven ability to analyze operational and clinical data to support decision-making, escalation, and system improvement. Experience working with patient flow, capacity management, access improvement, quality improvement, or utilization management initiatives. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work across multiple locations and care settings within the Edmonton Health Corridor. Travel may be required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams required; experience with healthcare information systems and operational dashboards is an asset.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with operational leaders, physicians, multidisciplinary teams, and external partners. Excellent critical thinking, conflict resolution, negotiation, and problem-solving skills in complex and rapidly changing environments. Ability to coordinate and escalate system-level barriers impacting patient flow, repatriation, and care transitions. Experience facilitating meetings, case reviews, operational huddles, and multidisciplinary discussions. Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a patient-centered and system-focused approach. Knowledge of healthcare system structures, care transitions, and community resources. Experience leading or supporting change initiatives and process improvement activities utilizing formal change management methodologies. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a 24/7 operational environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Health Professions degree in clinical discipline, business, health administration, or related field. Certification or training in quality improvement, Lean methodologies, Alberta Improvement Way, IHI Open School, patient flow, utilization management, or healthcare operations. Experience working within an Integrated Operations Centre, command centre, patient flow office, transfer coordination service, or large multi-site healthcare organization is preferred.
