Join our dedicated team as a Casual Relief Worker, working as a casual frontline Crisis Counsellor, where your compassionate presence makes a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals facing challenging circumstances. This workplace setting is an Emergency First Stage, 19 bed, Violence Against Women (VAW) Shelter for women and women with children fleeing abuse. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to provide immediate emotional support, crisis intervention, resources and practical assistance to those in need. You will be required to be available to cover a variety of shifts including days, evenings and overnights on weekdays and weekends, offering respectful and effective support to this vulnerable population when they need it most. This is a fast-paced work environment. We are looking for workers with a trauma informed, energetic and proactive approach to foster safety, stability, and hope for clients during difficult times.
Duties
- Provide trauma informed crisis intervention, counselling and emotional support to women and children experiencing abuse and related distress or trauma
- Provide information, resources & referrals
- Advocate for women and liaise with community agencies
- Assist clients with communal living and daily activities
- Respond promptly to emergency situations
- Document client interactions accurately while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to shelter confidentiality procedures
- Answer the 24 hours crisis line, perform safety, risk, and intake assessments
- Prior experience working with vulnerable populations and the violence against women sector and an understanding of associated barriers
- Knowledge of resources and supports
- Knowledge of social systems such as housing, OW/ODSP, legal system and CAS
- Strong interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work in stressful situations with professionalism and compassion
