Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Wellness, the primary purpose of the Head Coach – Men’s Volleyball is to provide leadership to the student-athletes and the Thunder Men’s Volleyball program. This is achieved through the coaching, recruitment, retention and community relations duties required in organizing a competitive and successful team, while promoting academic success for the student-athletes.
Key accountabilities include leading a competitive program, promoting academic success, maintaining an active recruiting plan, fundraising, community engagement, and utilizing instructional techniques to ensure successful delivery of coaching strategies.
The incumbent provides a wide range of services such as sport technical expertise, promotion, conflict resolution and guidance to student-athletes in an inclusive environment. The position requires knowledge and understanding of community, provincial, national and international trends in sport development.

Program Building
- Recruiting - Maintain an active, focused recruiting plan to attract and retain promising and potential student-athletes into our sports programs
- Training – Plan, develop, select, and revise training material to maximize athletic and team performance through use of various instructional strategies to run practice sessions
- Prioritize Academic Excellence - Create a balanced training schedule that enables student-athletes to succeed academically.
- Competitions – Support and be responsible for student-athletes at competitions locally, provincially and nationally
- Outcomes – Strive for improvement from the previous season, be a competitive program, create team cohesiveness.
- Feedback - Analyze performance to give feedback to the student-athlete regularly to achieve peak performance
- Student-Athlete Safety - Assess the mental and physical condition of student-athletes to ensure safety of the participants and provide a safe environment for volunteers, student-athletes and colleagues at local, provincial, inter-provincial and international games/exchanges.
- Compliance – Understand and follow all department (Coaches Handbook), institutional, conference (ACAC), and national (CCAA) policies & procedures.
Administration
- Eligibility – Ensure student-athletes meet ACAC and CCAA eligibility requirements and complete all student athlete forms associated with eligibility, in consultation with the Program and Sport Information Coordinator
- Organization - Meet all deadlines related to eligibility, scholarship, and department requests.
- Scholarships – Complete scholarship tracking sheet and administer scholarship offer letters within the parameters of the department policies.
- Support Staff Hiring – Select, hire, and train all program required support staff (assistant coaches, equipment manager, trainer)
- Collection of Student-Athlete Information and documentation– Have student-athletes complete athletic therapy, medical, drug education, and personal information forms.
- Meetings – Attend all department and conference meetings.
Fiscal Responsibility
- Fundraising – Participate in and coordinate team, department, and institution fundraising initiatives.
- Team Account – Manage the team fundraising account to ensure it is not running in a deficit each year.
- Accountability - Taking accountability in financial matters related to travel, purchase of equipment, and other applicable expenses.
Communications
- Sports Information Requirements – Conduct interviews and fulfill all other sports information requests from the department of Athletics and Wellness.
- Department Information - Communicate department information with student-athletes and assistant coaches in a timely manner.
- Accessibility - Actively check emails and respond to student-athlete inquiries and department requests in a timely manner.
Community Involvement
- Community Service – Develop and encourage participation in team community service initiatives.
- Department Initiatives – Participate in all department community initiatives as requested.
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Coaching experience at the College, University, Junior, Provincial, National, or Professional level is required.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
- NCCP Level 2 Certification (or equivalent) is required; willingness to work on NCCP Level 3 certification (or equivalent) is preferred.
- Physical stamina to participate in training programs and practices is recommended.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check results are required.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends is required.
