St. Leonard’s Place Peel is seeking a Line Cook to join our kitchen team through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Based on Canada Summer Jobs criteria, all candidates must be between the ages of 18-30 years old.
Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations you will prepare and serve nutritious, well-balanced meals to the residents in accordance with the organization's philosophy and goals & objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Interaction and Support
- Engage with residents during meal service while maintaining professional boundaries, fostering a positive dining experience.
Quality Assurance/Health and safety
- Adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures, including wearing appropriate kitchen attire and using proper handling and sanitation procedures.
- Identifying and reporting any health, safety or environmental concerns to management promptly.
- Ensuring all food prepared is handled and stored in accordance with food safety regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen, including washing dishes, utensils, cooking equipment, and ensuring workstations are properly sanitized.
Meal Preparation and Cooking
- Prepare meals in accordance with pre-determined menus, ensuring that meals are nutritious, balanced, and meet the dietary needs of residents including any specific dietary restrictions or preferences.
- Ensure food quality and presentation is consistent and compliant with health standards.
- Use appropriate cooking techniques and follow recipes, portion sizes, and food safety guidelines.
- Prepare special meals or snacks.
Inventory and Supply Management
- Assist in inventory management, ordering food, supplies and communicating with supervisors regarding shortages or needs.
- Ensure proper labelling and storage of food items to prevent spoilage.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborating with other staff and residents to ensure food preferences, dietary needs, and cultural sensitives are respected.
- Work closely with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth meal service and preparation.
- Attend staff meetings to discuss menu planning, dietary needs, and client preferences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent; culinary training or certification preferred
- Current Food Handler’s Certificate
- Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment, preferably in a residential or healthcare setting would be an asset
- Experience working with individuals with complex behavioral needs, mental health challenges or addiction recovery is an asset
- Knowledge of food safety practices and dietary needs
- Knowledge of food serving techniques and principles of sanitation
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Software

WORK CONDITIONS
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays
- Physical demands may include standing for long periods, lifting heavy items, and operating kitchen equipment
Employment Type: Full-Time (35 hours per week)
Shift Focus: Monday to Friday (8:00am to 3:30pm)
Employment Length: 8-week contract
