About 3GA Marine Ltd.
3GA Marine Ltd. is a marine engineering and naval architecture firm based in British Columbia, providing practical, client-focused engineering solutions for a wide range of vessel and marine projects. Our work includes vessel design, refits, modifications, surveys, technical studies, regulatory submissions, and engineering support for commercial, government, and industrial marine clients.
Position Overview
We are seeking an Intermediate Naval Architect to join our growing team. This is an office-based naval architecture and vessel design role focused on engineering analysis, design documentation, regulatory support, and project deliverables. It is not a seagoing or onboard marine engineering position and is not intended for candidates whose experience is primarily in vessel operations, watchkeeping, engine room operations, or shipboard maintenance. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers, project managers, designers, and clients to deliver high-quality marine engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare, review, and support vessel design packages, technical drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports.
· Perform naval architecture calculations, including stability, weight estimates, structural considerations, resistance, powering, and general arrangement support.
· Assist with vessel refit, modification, and new design projects for a variety of vessel types, including ferries, workboats, tugs, barges, research vessels, and floating structures.
· Support regulatory submissions and compliance reviews related to Transport Canada, classification society, and client requirements.
· Develop and review 2D and 3D models, drawings, and technical documentation using appropriate engineering and design software.
· Participate in project meetings, internal design reviews, and client communications.
· Coordinate with multidisciplinary team members, including mechanical, electrical, structural, and marine systems personnel.
· Conduct technical research, prepare design options, and support practical problem-solving for marine projects.
· Assist with surveys, field reviews, and site visits when required.
· Maintain organized project records and contribute to clear, professional engineering deliverables.
Qualifications and Experience
· Degree in Naval Architecture is required. Candidates must have formal education in Naval Architecture and demonstrated experience in vessel design, naval architecture, and design-office work.
· Intermediate-level experience in naval architecture, vessel design, marine engineering, or a closely related marine design environment.
· Experience should be primarily in naval architecture, marine design, engineering consulting, vessel design office work, or related technical design and analysis roles, rather than onboard vessel operations.
· P.Eng. designation, EIT status, or eligibility and willingness to work toward professional registration in Canada.
· Experience working on vessel design, refit, modification, or regulatory projects.
· Strong technical writing skills and ability to prepare clear calculations, reports, specifications, and design documentation.
· Sound understanding of vessel stability, structures, marine systems, general arrangements, and regulatory requirements.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
· Strong attention to detail, professional judgment, and commitment to quality and safety.
Software Skills
Experience with one or more of the following programs is preferred: AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, Rhino, SolidWorks, ANSYS, GHS, or similar naval architecture, CAD, modelling, or analysis software. Candidates with transferable software experience and a willingness to learn new tools will also be considered.
What We Are Looking For
· A practical problem-solver who can apply engineering principles to real-world vessel and marine challenges.
· A strong communicator who can work effectively with engineers, designers, clients, vendors, and regulatory bodies.
· A detail-oriented professional who takes pride in accurate, organized, and high-quality work.
· A team member who is adaptable, self-motivated, and comfortable contributing to a busy consulting environment.
· Someone with genuine interest in vessel design, marine systems, and the Canadian marine industry.
Work Arrangement and Compensation
This is a full-time position based in our Burnaby, BC office. The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $90,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, and technical skill level. 3GA Marine Ltd. offers the opportunity to work on varied marine projects in a collaborative professional environment with room for continued growth and development.
How to Apply
Interested candidates are invited to submit a resume and cover letter outlining their relevant naval architecture, vessel design, engineering analysis, documentation, and software experience. Applicants are encouraged to clearly identify design-office or engineering consulting experience, as this role is not intended for primarily seagoing or onboard marine engineering backgrounds. Please include your availability, salary expectations, and professional registration status, if applicable.
