Nature and Scope:

The Fitness Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and delivery of high-quality health, wellness, and group fitness programming at the membership branch, including Personal Training, Fitness Orientations, and general fitness areas, to enhance member experience and engagement. This role actively recruits, trains, schedules, and performance-manages fitness staff, personal trainers, and volunteers. The Fitness Supervisor ensures a “5 Star” YMCA Experience for all members, participants and clients while supporting membership recruitment and retention through service excellence.
Major Responsibilities: in this position, you will:
- Communicate and escalate facility and operational concerns to the Centre Manager and Facilities Manager, fostering a respectful and positive workplace culture across teams.
- Perform Duty Manager responsibilities, overseeing daily facility operations, supporting staff, resolving conflicts, and ensuring the safety of members and employees.
- Participate as an active member of the YMCA leadership team by joining committees, contributing to employee engagement initiatives, and supporting cross-department projects and events.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver fitness-related events and programs tailored to community groups to increase engagement and participation.
- Support Personal Training, Fitness Floor, and Group Fitness teams in achieving booking and participation targets through active member outreach and relationship building.
- Collaborate with the Centre Manager to execute the fitness budget, monitor performance against targets, and adjust expenses to align with program goals.
- Lead the Fitness department, including recruitment, onboarding, coaching, performance management, payroll, and scheduling of staff and volunteers, while managing high daily service volumes.
- Oversee operational excellence by ensuring staff certifications are current, maintaining equipment and supplies, managing class schedules, and responding to member feedback to enhance services.
- Support YMCA Canada standards and initiatives (including certifications and orientations) and contribute to the YMCA BC Fitness Subject Matter Expert group by implementing programs, sharing insights, and providing reports and recommendations.
Qualifications-you bring:
- 1-2 years of supervisory experience leading diverse teams of staff and volunteers
- 1-2 years previous work/volunteer experience in a health & fitness setting, such as personal training or teaching group fitness
- Post-Secondary Education/training in health/fitness related field (Kinesiology, Personal Training, Group Fitness Instructor Certification)
- Demonstrated achievement of administrative tasks, such as checklists, schedules, invoicing, summary reports, maintaining calendars
- Experience using Microsoft programs such as Word, Teams, Excel and Outlook
- Proven knowledge in the areas of exercise science, nutrition, choreography, and fitness trends
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate
- Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
