Respite Worker – Job Description
Position: Respite Worker (Part-Time/Casual)
I am seeking a compassionate, reliable, and patient Respite Worker to provide one-on-one support for a 25-year-old adult with autism. The successful candidate will help promote independence, encourage community involvement, and provide meaningful companionship in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment. This is a very part time position.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized support based on the individual’s needs, preferences, and goals.
- Assist with community outings such as shopping, walking, recreational activities, appointments, and social events.
- Encourage the development of life skills, independence, and confidence.
- Support participation in hobbies, interests, and physical activities.
- Assist with meal preparation and light housekeeping related to activities during the shift.
- Maintain a structured, calm, and positive environment.
- Use clear, respectful, and effective communication techniques appropriate for individuals with autism.
- Monitor for signs of stress or anxiety and respond using appropriate de-escalation strategies.
- Ensure the individual’s safety and well-being at all times.
- Maintain confidentiality and treat the individual with dignity and respect.
- Complete brief shift notes and communicate any concerns or significant events to the family or designated supervisor.
Qualifications
- Experience supporting individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities is preferred.
- Certificate or diploma in Human Services, Community Support, Personal Care, Social Work, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment.

Pay: From $17.00 per hour
