Position Purpose
Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA) was created in 2013 as a powerful and unifying voice for eight Nlaka’pamux Bands regarding the Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the eight Participating Bands. Headquartered in Merritt, BC, with a workforce of over 40, CNA provides training and job readiness along with cultural, social, and technical programming to the over 3035 members of the eight Participating Bands.
The ʔesknstwexʷ Department is seeking a dedicated Language Vitality Support worker to help strengthen language use, learning, and community engagement across programs and initiatives. Centered on community learning, this role promotes fluent language use and nurtures strong relationships with nłeʔképmx community members. Internally, it supports team leads, operational staff, and the effective use of grant resources to advance language and cultural initiatives
Primary Duties
- Support language use and vitality in departmental activities and programming,
- Working closely with a team to coordinate daily and ongoing tasks,
- Assist in maintaining clear, consistent, and respectful communication within the team and with the wider community,
- Support community engagement efforts, including outreach, events, and participation initiatives,
- Help ensure language is actively used in workplace settings and encouraged across all programming,
- Provide general administrative and program support as needed, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Comfortable communicating in nłeʔkepmxcín,
- Demonstrated experience using and working in the language in professional, educational, or community settings,
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license,
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in language work, community engagement, or related fields,
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and follow directions from team leaders,
- Knowledge of and experience in working with Indigenous heritage, language, traditionalpractices,
- Willingness to learn nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity, and
- Strong communication skills and comfort engaging with community members.
Experience and Requirements
- Experience in transcription and/or translation not required but helpful,
- Experience in language teaching, curriculum support, or resource development,
- Experience supporting or facilitating meetings, gatherings, or events, and
- Familiarity with language revitalization initiatives or community-based language programs.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the CNA office at 2025 Granite Ave, Merritt BC.
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
- Personal and Professional Development: As part of total compensation, we supply full-time permanent employees with the means to advance their skills and education.
This position is funded by First Peoples Cultural Council (FPCC) – Language Vitality Program, to support in advancement of language programs within our language group - nłeʔkepmxcín.
