EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – EXTERNAL POSTING
The Nipigon Public Works Department requires a skilled and licensed individual, capable of working in a team environment. We currently have an opening for a Full Time Water, Wastewater, and Equipment Operator in our Public Works Department.
Salary range: Per the CUPE Local 87-09 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
Full-time, 40 hours per week. Monday to Friday 7:00am-4:00pm with the condition of working evenings and weekends based on the needs of the Township and in the event of emergencies or significant weather events. On-call is required.
REPORTING TO:
Public Works Foreman, Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) and in their absence the Public Works Superintendent.
DUTIES:
- Basic duties in the day-to-day operations of water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment.
- Ensures optimum quality and flow for consumers.
- Performs basic inspections and calibrations of water & wastewater treatment equipment.
- Obtains routine samples and performs basic tests on water & wastewater related to process optimization using calibrated testing equipment.
- Places a high value on record keeping duties and maintenance operations on an as-needed basis.
- Takes a regular turn on call.
- Participates in emergency response to watermain breaks.
- Follows and provides input on the:
o Standard Operating Procedures (SOP),
o Approved Operational Plan (OP);
o Quality Management System (QMS),
o Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (DWQMS); and,
o Operation and Maintenance Manual
- Member of the QMS Team and responsible for reviewing QMS Procedures prior to Approval by QMS Rep.
- Performs day-to-day activities to maintain the integrity of both the Drinking Water System and Wastewater System.
- Ensures compliance with operational guidelines and regulations established by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE).
- Maintains personal training records.
- Ensures certification is current and satisfies legislative requirements for both the Drinking Water System and the Wastewater System.
- Responds to emergencies as required.
- Conducts regular inspections of the Drinking Water System and the Wastewater System to ensure operations are maintained at the required level of quality.
- Completes daily inspection reports and records relative to equipment use.
- Conducts inspection and patrols, initiating or implementing controls, repairs and/or elimination of risk or hazard, maintaining concise records.
- Considers risks and ramifications of their actions.
- Participates in testing and development of protocols and contingency plans.
- Implements action plans to rectify deficiencies identified in audits and inspections of both the Drinking Water System and the Wastewater System.
- Identifies and brings forward to the OMS Rep opportunities for improving the OMS.
- Supervises work (quality and safety) of on-site contractors.
- Supervises the quality of supplies delivery.
- Any other duties as assigned from time to time.
RELATED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ministry of Environment Class I Water Treatment license and Class II Wastewater Treatment license required;
- Ideal candidate would assume the role of alternate/backup ORO;
- Municipal experience is an asset;
- Knowledge and experience utilizing equipment commonly used in public works activities including but not limited to Grader, Rubber Tire Backhoe Loader, Dozer, Plow Trucks & Sanders, Street Sweeper, Sidewalk Plow, Garbage Packer, Lawn Mowers, etc., is an asset
- Must possess a valid DZ class driver’s license
- Knowledge of the municipal infrastructure systems, including roads, sewer and water, buildings and public spaces.
- Working knowledge of Ontario Regulation 239/02 and other relevant municipal, provincial, and environmental regulations.
- Good physical condition and ability to cope with stress.
