Summary of Role
Assess, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate therapeutic programs designed to meet the holistic needs and abilities of older adults attending the day program, in collaboration with the health care team.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Utilize an assessment tool to develop effective therapeutic recreation programs that meet the needs and abilities of the participant.
· Develop individual interventions and group programs, in conjunction with the health care team.
· Implement, demonstrate and participate in recreational programs.
· Evaluate and document the effectiveness of recreational programs through observation and by obtaining information and feedback from the health care team, the participant and their caregiver.
· Adapt and modify programs and interventions to meet the needs and abilities of the participant.
· Complete all related organizational and administrative tasks, including but not limited to: purchasing/organizing program supplies, coordinating entertainment, program calendars and assembling material/items for program use.
· Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the program budget, through the utilization of creative and cost-effective program initiatives.
· Train and supervise the Recreation Facilitator(s) by performing such duties as assigning work, providing coaching and feedback, applying time management and recommending training upgrades. Provide input on probationary and performance reviews.
· Direct other health care team members as required, in order to coordinate effective care of the participant and the overall program.
· Encourage participant to perform activities of daily living, independently.
· Reports changes and/or concerns regarding the participant’s behavioural, cognitive and physical status to the Licensed Practical Nurse and to the health care team.
· Maintain all required records and documents, such as individual and group program protocols and participant progress reports.
· Attend and participate in the participant care meetings
· Lead monthly recreation team meetings.
· Respond to participant inquiries and complaints appropriately, escalating issues to the appropriate person as required.
· Participate in the training, performance management and evaluation of Recreation Facilitator staff, students and volunteers.
· Assist with in-service staff training.
· All other related duties as directed by the Day Program Manager.
Education and Training
· Graduation from a recognized Therapeutic Recreation diploma program, with a focus on older adults) is required; a bachelors’ degree in Therapeutic Recreation is preferred.
· Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate.
· Valid Food Safe Certificate.
Experience
· Recent, relevant experience of two years or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
· Physically fit to perform the above duties which may include standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 10+ lbs.
· Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
· Effective written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and without direct supervision.
· Knowledge of a second language is considered an asset.

Pay: $36.06-$37.75 per hour
Expected hours: 35 per week
