BCI is seeking a Director, Stewardship to join our ESG team within Capital Markets & Credit Investments (CM&CI).
In this leadership role, you'll take the reins of BCI's stewardship program, driving meaningful engagement with portfolio companies, boards, and global standard-setters to deliver on the Influence pillar of BCI's Corporate ESG Strategy and Climate Action Plan. Reports to the Senior Managing Director & Global Head of ESG, the Director, Stewardship takes a leadership role in the ESG team in executing the Influence pillar of the overall Corporate ESG Strategy and Climate Action Plan. The focus of the role is developing and maintaining a comprehensive engagement program covering both equities and fixed income including proxy voting, direct and collaborative engagement. In addition to stewardship responsibilities, the Director will have direct reports and broadly serve as a mentor to junior members of the team.
The Director, Stewardship role involves interacting with many BCI internal and external stakeholders on ESG matters. The main stakeholders are internal CM&CI teams; portfolio company management teams and board directors; standard-setting organizations; domestic and global investment peers; and, investor-led collaborative engagement organizations, such as Climate Action 100+. The ideal candidate brings a long-term investing mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Credibility and experience with company senior management and boards is crucial for this role.
The CM&CI department manages C$165B of capital markets and credit investments (56% of total net AUM of BCI). The department invests globally across Credit, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, and Absolute Return Strategies, with investment teams located in BCI's global offices in Victoria, Vancouver, New York, and London. As a leader in responsible investing, CM&CI actively integrates ESG factors into investment analysis and decision-making processes across all strategies.
BCI partners with 32 public sector clients in British Columbia to generate investment returns that help provide a financially secure future to their members. As part of prudent investment management, BCI aims to mitigate long-term financial risks that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters present. ESG considerations are integrated into investment analysis, decisions, and processes consistently across the corporation. The team has built strong stewardship capabilities as engaging with portfolio companies and standard setters is key to our success. The team consists of multi-disciplinary professionals who support all asset classes on integration and asset management and serve as subject matter experts for our clients.
Must have:
Relevant university degree complemented by research/industry experience
Minimum 10 years of ESG experience including at least 7 in financial services/Capital Markets
Experience in conducting engagements with senior management and board directors with advanced knowledge of stakeholder relationship management
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, in writing and verbally
Advanced knowledge of material ESG issues and their risk/return impacts, especially corporate governance
Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative analysis and research experience
Strong risk management mindset
Diplomatic, tactful, and strong interpersonal skills
Strategic thinker with strong business judgment
Experience managing a team with direct reports and/or matrix structure
Preferred:
A graduate degree, MBA, CFA, and/or JD
Relevant professional designation
Specialized knowledge of ESG risks in international markets
Leads the engagement program for CM&CI and delivers tangible engagement outcomes
Identifies effective ways of sharing insights across asset class teams to create value
Implements the Influence pillar of BCI’s Corporate ESG Strategy covering all environmental, social and governance matters
Implements the top financed emitters engagement strategy out to 2030
Contributes to client reporting on stewardship activities and outcomes
Has overall responsibility for the proxy voting program in Capital Markets
Provides leadership and mentoring to direct reports to foster the desired culture
Represents BCI at relevant industry conferences to maintain BCI’s leadership and reputation as a world class asset manager
Periodically reviews engagement priorities to ensure proper allocation of resources
Has oversight of external research providers necessary for stewardship activities
Maintains an appropriate balance between direct and collaborative engagement
Collaborates with internal investment teams where we have active holdings and ensure alignment on engagement strategies
Contributes to policy engagement where it impacts capital markets and stewardship
Maintains a global network of institutional peers
Serves on the leadership team for ESG ensuring activities are prioritized appropriately and objectives are being met
Represents BCI at client meetings as well as the BCI Board providing ESG intelligence as it relates to stewardship practices
This role will be based in our office in downtown Victoria, BC.
The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $185,000 - $220,000.
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package, including a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, and paid time off. We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration for internal equity and job structure. The base salary will consider factors such as the individual's skill set, experience, and internal equity. We aim for actual pay to be around the market median for expected performance and the upper quartile for excellent performance. Actual salaries may vary based on experience and expertise.
