Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one (1) full-time, permanent position of
Journeyperson Carpenter with Facility Maintenance & Operation a division of Property, Fleet & Environment. Working under the direction of the Supervisor Building Operations the incumbent is responsible for structural repairs in HRM facilities’ equipment including roofs, overhead doors, windows, siding, etc. The work location will be 375 Cowie Hill Road, Halifax. The incumbent may be subject to call out on a rotational basis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:-
Routine preventative maintenance program, emergency repairs and necessary record keeping.

Equipment includes overhead doors, windows, roofs, renovations to existing infrastructure.

Performing all duties in accordance with legislative safety practices and procedures at all times to ensure their own safety and the safety of team members and staff.

Constructs, repairs, and generally maintains, wood composite, gypsum, plastic laminate, metal and concrete components of the structure and infrastructure.

Operates hand, power, pneumatic activated tools and equipment in an effective and safe manner.

Maintains knowledge of all materials related to the trade and seeks out information on new materials that may be appropriate for use in educational/institutional buildings.

Utilizes construction and building sciences theory to resolve building failure problems (e.g., building envelope failure).

Makes recommendations to the Supervisor for future Infrastructure Maintenance Program upgrades.

Prepares reports, schedules surveys or recommendations as requested.

Completes work orders and time sheets daily on a computerized system.

Assist inspection of new facilities and renovations as required.

Assists the Supervisor in determining stock levels and types of carpentry-related materials to be procured.

Assists Facility Operators in building operation with respect to structural related matters and repairs.

Adequately stocks vehicle when a service vehicle is assigned. Maintains cleanliness and basic service checks.

Works collaboratively with all other trades in the repair/service of structural components and related equipment.

Prepare reports on work performed and condition of facilities.

Advise clients regarding standards, safety features and maintenance of structural equipment.

Read and interpret drawings or specifications to determine work to be performed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:-
Grade 12 or equivalent.

Must have a current & valid Interprovincial Journeyperson Carpentry status.

Must have 4 years previous related experience in all aspects of structural repairs and maintenance.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s licence: provide current Driver Abstract.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:-
Must be reliable, punctual and have a good attendance record. Health must be compatible with job requirements.

Must have good oral and written communication skills.

Must work well with minimum supervision.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s license: provide current Driver Abstract.

Clear understanding of Facility Service’s service delivery.
-
Clear understanding of HRM Procurement policies and delivery system.

Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and environmental regulation and practices.

Experience and knowledge of HRM relevant software, i.e., MS Word, Excel, SAP, Outlook, and computerized work order management software.

WORK STATUS: 1 full-time position.
SALARY: $36.34 per hour (Level 9) as per the Halifax Civic Workers’ Union CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; overtime hours may be required.
