Your opportunity:
Reporting to the Curator and Heritage Services Manager, the Member Service Associate role is responsible for creating and fostering a welcoming environment through excellent customer service. You will have the opportunity to work with local history, artifacts, archives and host group visits, develop and deliver museum and library programs, register new members, and assist with responding to research inquires. The successful applicant is expected to be available to work any shift during Library, Museums and Archives hours of operation and perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
Salary Range: $30.95 to $37.62 per hour (2024 rate)
Status: Affiliated, Regular Full-Time
Work location: System-wide
Schedule: Average of 35 hours per week, including two (2) evenings per week and alternating weekends
Physical demands: Shelving, bending, stooping, stretching, standing, lifting, pushing/pulling book trucks and boxes of material
Position Responsibilities:
- Delivers museum and library focused programs for all ages which focus on education and generating interest in the discovery of local history in the community.
- Prepares artifacts for exhibitions in a manner that utilizes exhibition space efficiently & effectively and participates in the planning of exhibits, displays and promotion of same.
- Contributes to providing a welcoming environment for all visitors and delivers excellent customer service.
- Facilitates information and knowledge discovery through the provision of CLMA resources, including computer hardware, the library and archives catalogues, physical materials, and online resources.
- Assists in digital literacy training for the public using CLMA technology resources.
- Deliver exceptional customer service by registering members for cards and programs, determining customer needs, referring them to appropriate resources, checking materials in and out, accurately completing fiscal transactions, processing materials for the courier, updating the catalogue, and transferring items in floating collections.
- Under the direction of the Manager, Heritage Services and the guidance of predetermined policies and procedures, reviews artifacts and archival collection and makes recommendations for deaccessioning materials, with final decisions for the deaccessioning of artifact and archival items made by the Library Board.
- Responsible for artifact handling and ensuring condition is preserved and maintained in both storage and in public spaces
- Maintains the visual standards of CLMA, including the planning and implementation of displays, promotions, shelving material, shelf reading, and weeding.
- Completes research/statistical compilation and report writing as required.
- Comply with all procedures and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safety Policies, and other applicable legislation or regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- Completion of an accredited Library Technician diploma program or Museum Studies with one year of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience to the satisfaction of the CEO.
- Knowledge and experience in preparing written displays of artifacts and planning, designing and delivering of programs.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
- Experience in, and comfortable with, working with large groups of children and members of all ages.
- Demonstrated knowledge of public library/museum resources and how to search for information.
- Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of technological applications, including but not limited to, the Internet, electronic databases, social media and Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a changing environment.
- Strong knowledge of local history resources, Ontario and Canadian history, and how to search for information.
- Proven ability to research exhibition content accurately and comprehensively and to select key content and/or stories suitable for target audiences.
- Knowledge and experience in maintaining artifacts and archival collection storage and handling procedures such as artifact conservation, restoration, and stabilization using approved conservation methods.
- Ability to balance multiple responsibilities and priorities.
- Willingness to learn new skills on the job.
- Valid First Aid Certification is considered an asset.
- Frequent travel between branches is required.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is required prior to commencement of employment.
