The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) was established in 1985 to support cultural groups and newcomers through programs and events, and to foster cross-cultural awareness and understanding. We are currently seeking Ukrainian Translators and Interpreters to provide translation services for our clients throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Overview
As a casual community interpreter and translator, you will be responsible for interpreting, translating and providing communication between individuals and organizations who do not share a common language. Please note that 'casual' in this context refers to a flexible work arrangement on an on-call and as-needed basis, not a full-time or part-time employee. You will work in various settings, including medical, educational, social services and more, to provide accurate and sensitive interpretation and translation services. This position is only open to those in the Fort McMurray region.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site, face-to-face and telephone interpretation for clients in various settings.
- Translate documents, maintaining the original material's content, context, and style.
- Ensure that all interpretations and translations are accurate, clear, and unbiased.
- Help to foster positive relationships with community members and partners through a commitment to excellent customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information at all times.
- Collaborate with other interpreters and translators to support large-scale community projects.
- Stay updated with relevant terminology, language trends, and cultural nuances.
Skills
- Proven experience in interpretation and translation between Amharic and English
- Excellent writing skills for producing clear, accurate translated documents
- Exceptional communication skills to effectively convey messages across languages and cultures
- Bilingual fluency in Amharic and English is essential
- Proficiency in typing for efficient document preparation
- Ability to interpret complex concepts accurately while maintaining cultural nuances
Qualifications
- Candidates must include a resume with relevant experience.
- A university diploma or equivalent and relevant certification in linguistics or language studies is a plus.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Candidates must be able to travel either by car or public transportation to the location of any in-person assignments.
- Legally able to work in Canada and must reside in Fort McMurray.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
