Job Purpose:
The Facilities Lead is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, functionality, and overall readiness of Ark Aid Street Mission Inc. facilities. This role combines hands-on custodial and maintenance work with day-to-day coordination of cleaning operations, supplies, and facility upkeep.
This role is primarily focused on ensuring that all Ark Aid spaces are clean, safe, operational, and welcoming for community members, staff, volunteers, and visitors. By maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and facility care, the Facilities Lead directly supports the Christian mission of Ark Aid Street Mission Inc. - creating spaces where individuals experiencing homelessness and marginalization can access dignity, care, and belonging.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Cleaning & Maintenance:
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and welcoming environment across all Ark Aid facilities, both inside and outside.
- Clean and disinfect high-traffic and high-risk areas including washrooms, kitchens, sleeping areas, offices, hallways, stairwells, and entrances.
- Ensure exterior grounds, sidewalks, and entrances are clear, safe, and maintained, including snow and ice removal.
- Perform minor repairs and basic maintenance tasks as needed and escalate larger issues to management or external contractors.
- Conduct routine walkthroughs to identify cleanliness issues, safety hazards, and maintenance concerns.
Facilities Coordination & Leadership:
- Provide daily coordination and task direction to cleaning staff and volunteers.
- Develop and maintain cleaning schedules and task assignments to ensure consistent coverage of all facility areas.
- Support onboarding and training of new staff and volunteers on cleaning procedures, equipment use, and safety standards.
- Monitor work quality and provide informal coaching and feedback.
- Coordinate shift coverage and communicate facility priorities to staff and volunteers.
Maintenance Systems & Monitoring:
- Conduct routine checks of building systems including ventilation, heating/cooling, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and general functionality.
- Track maintenance concerns and communicate issues to leadership or service providers.
- Support coordination of external maintenance contractors and building access when required.
- Maintain basic logs for facility inspections, repairs, and completed maintenance tasks.
Inventory & Supply Management:
- Track, maintain, and reorder janitorial, cleaning, and maintenance supplies.
- Ensure cleaning tools and equipment are functional, safe, and properly stored.
- Monitor supply usage and identify cost-saving or efficiency opportunities.
- Maintain organized storage areas for cleaning and facility materials.
Donations & Operational Support:
- Assist with receiving, sorting, and distributing donations as operational needs require.
- Support setup and reset of program spaces and community areas as needed.
- Respond to urgent cleaning or facility needs to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required Qualifications:
- Class G driver's license
- CPR and First Aid Certification
- Vulnerable Sector Check
- Ability to safely perform physically demanding work (standing, lifting, bending, walking)
- A strong, demonstrable commitment to the Christian values, faith-based mission, and community-led vision of Ark Aid.
Preferred Qualifications:
- WHMIS certification
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous janitorial, custodial, or facilities maintenance experience
- Experience working in community, shelter, or multi-use public facilities
- Experience in informal leadership or coordinating staff/volunteers
