Unit Summary:
A 45 bed neuro medical surgical ICU including 8 level 2 beds. We are the regional stroke and neurosciences center, specifically, as a stroke and vascular center—we see patients requiring hyperacute stroke care, post endovascular thrombectomies and abdominal aortic aneurysms. All other patients are of the medical surgical nature, requiring invasive ventilation and monitoring.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Clinical Manager of the Intensive Care Unit, the ideal candidate will be focused on providing superior patient centered care in a dynamic, complex and rapidly changing environment where they will be given the opportunity to drive innovation and change.
Responsibilities:
- Assessing a patient’s condition and planning and implementing patient care plans
- Observing and recording patient vital signs
- Administering intravenous fluids and medications
- Responding to life-saving situations, using nursing standards and protocols for treatment
- Collaborating with fellow members of the critical care team
- Providing education and support to patient families
- Acting as patient advocate
- Demonstrate a commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required.
Qualification:
- Graduate of a recognized College or School of Nursing and preferably hold a Baccalaureate degree
- Registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or currently meet the eligibility criteria to register in good standing in the Temporary Class or General Class with the CNO
- BCLS required
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire
- 3-5 years Intensive Care Unit nursing experience or successful completion of a recognized intensive care course with 1 year of ICU nursing experience preferred
- Must be able to interpret advanced arrhythmias and 12 lead ECG
- Experienced with monitors, pumps, ECG machines, phlebotomy, and invasive pressure monitoring ventilators.
- CCRN certification preferred
- Must possess excellent decision making & problem solving skills
- Must have strong leadership & assessment skills
- Must have a history of ongoing professional development and be a self-directed learner
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and Commitment to customer service and teamwork
- Demonstrates excellence in communication, both written and verbal
- Knowledge and skill of PRISMA or CRRT an asset
- Demonstrated skills in providing patient education and sharing knowledge of expected outcomes and care.
- Advanced physical assessment skills
- Positive attendance and work record essential
