Purchaser
Position Summary:
The Purchaser is responsible for procuring raw materials, fabricated components, dunnage and consumables, required to support customer work orders and daily operations. Working closely with estimating, engineering, production, and suppliers, the Purchaser ensures materials are available when needed while minimizing inventory levels and controlling costs. This position is critical to maintaining on-time delivery and profitability in a custom automotive welding and fabrication environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and purchase steel, aluminum, dunnage, hardware, welding consumables, and other materials required for production.
- Work with little to no inventory due to facility being a job shop
- Obtain and evaluate supplier quotations for job-specific requirements.
- Issue purchase orders and track order status through delivery.
- Identify and qualify new suppliers to improve pricing, quality, and lead times.
- Negotiate pricing and delivery schedules.
- Review production schedules, work orders, and bills of materials to determine purchasing requirements.
- Coordinate material purchases to support just-in-time manufacturing practices.
- Ensure materials are available to meet customer delivery dates.
- Expedite critical orders when production schedules change.
- Maintain strong relationships with suppliers and service providers.
- Monitor supplier performance related to quality, delivery, and responsiveness.
- Resolve issues involving shortages, damaged goods, incorrect shipments, or quality concerns.
Cost Control & Analysis
- Seek cost-saving opportunities through competitive sourcing and supplier negotiations.
- Monitor material pricing trends and communicate impacts to management.
- Assist with cost estimating by obtaining supplier pricing and lead-time information.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to purchasing and supply chain processes.
- Maintain accurate records of purchased materials and open purchase orders.
- Coordinate with receiving personnel to verify deliveries and resolve discrepancies.
- Create and maintain purchase orders, supplier records, and purchasing documentation.
- Ensure purchasing records comply with company policies and customer requirements.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Supply Chain Management, Business, Operations, or a related field or experience preferred.
- Experience working at a "job shop" with little to no inventory a major asset.
- 3+ years of purchasing experience in manufacturing, metal fabrication, welding, automotive, or industrial environments preferred.
- Strong understanding of metals, fabrication processes, and manufacturing operations.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to read and interpret bills of materials, drawings, and specifications.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Pay: $60,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
