MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree in a related study area with two years = directly-related experience related to Indigenous research, community research, health research, a health-related field, social-behavioral sciences, or related relevant fields.
OR
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with five years = directly related experience.
OR
- Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with six years = directly related experience.
- PhD or post-doctoral experience in a relevant field preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working within Indigenous or community-based research required.
- Work experience in research, non-profit, government, educational, community or health care setting is required.
- Training in the principles of Indigenous research, patient-oriented research community-based participatory research and/or patient engagement an asset (e.g. IAP2 certification).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Communication Skills
- Active and empathetic listening skills to gain insight into the experiences, values, beliefs, perspectives, motivations, interests, issues and innovations of community members is required.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, editorial and verbal communication skills are required.
- Effective relationship building and facilitation skills to foster collaboration among individuals and groups is required.
- Knowledge and understanding of strategies and methods to engage citizens/communities in decision-making processes (i.e. variety of participatory approaches) are required.
- Public speaking skills to facilitate meetings and workshops and to deliver learning materials is required.
- Values equity, diversity and inclusion and operates with integrity and openness. Values different ways of knowing and anti-oppressive practice is required.
- Experience working and negotiating with multiple stakeholder groups (e.g., health professionals, persons with lived experience, Indigenous communities, the public, etc) is required.
Indigenous & Community Research Skills
- Familiarity with the standards for ethical research with Indigenous communities is required.
- Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team, preferably in the field of research, population health or clinical sciences are required.
- Knowledge of and/or understanding of Indigenous protocols and ceremonies are requires.
Other
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment, able to follow detailed protocols and meet required deadlines is required.
- Strong time management skills to manage multiple projects and priorities are required.
- Proficiency with commonly used software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, MS-PowerPoint, other basic graphic design, online engagement platforms like Zoom and Microsoft teams) is required.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Responsibilities:
- Leadership role with the Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) Coordinates, schedules, and prepares agenda, minutes and action items for the Indigenous Advisory Council meetings. This involves direct connection and communication with Advisory Council members, meeting facilitation, and presentation of materials/resources, and decision making around the IAC activities.
- Utilizes a variety of participatory and community approaches to engage the Indigenous Advisory Council.
- Creates reports from Indigenous Advisory Council sessions for dissemination. Consult with researchers and other staff from diverse fields within CHI and Ongomiizwin Research to provide support related to navigating Indigenous health research (e.g. ethics boards, Indigenous Data Governance and Sovereignty principles, Indigenous research methods, Indigenous health research resources etc.)
- Collaborates with CHI and Ongomiizwin Research to provide navigation support to research community for Indigenous Research and engagement with Indigenous communities and organizations
- Collaborates with CHI and Ongomiizwin Research in implementing engagement frameworks and pathways with regards to navigating Indigenous health research.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Indigenous health research frameworks within CHI and Ongomiizwin Research.
- Assist with manuscript writing for the purpose of publishing reports and articles.
- Work within multi-disciplinary teams
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
