This position is accountable to the Associate Director, International and Student Services (ISS) for overseeing the daily operations at Nahoonai-a Indigenous Housing, and works in collaboration with both Student Services and the Vice President, Indigenization’s team in the design and implementation of a support system and educational network for Indigenous students who are making a transition from their home communities to the College of New Caledonia. As a community-recognized Elder or Mentor, the Cultural Advisor, Nahoonai-a will provide cultural guidance and mentorship to Indigenous students.
NATURE & SCOPE:
- Nahoonai-a was designed with a true ‘home’ feel as a twelve-bedroom house with a large living room, spacious kitchen, laundry area, study rooms, and beautiful cultural room. The first of its kind in the province, this unique position requires flexibility, adaptability, and continuous collaboration with the Associate Director, ISS, the Manager, Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion, the Director of Student Services and other College leadership.
- This role provides supports to students within the house, and the ongoing implementation of a life skills program that includes cooking, cleaning, and laundry duties for each student.
- The Cultural Advisor is actively engaged in supporting students by being familiar with community resources, college staff, services and supports. Understanding systems and processes enables the Cultural Advisor to provide effective and timely advice and mentorship to students.
- The Cultural Advisor must be available to students when their knowledge or attention is required, including on evenings and weekends.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
Specific Duties
- Provides cultural supports and interventions to enhance the academic success and retention of Indigenous students residing in Nahoonai-a, including traditional and cultural activities.
- Advocates for students with a focus on safety.
- Holds space where students can communicate needs and/or possibly be referred to existing resources and services that can provide emotional, mental and spiritual support.
- At the request of the Associate Director, ISS, represents CNC on relevant internal and external committees.
- Liaises with the Associate Director, ISS to ensure understanding of Community Standards and Guidelines, and expectations of students living on campus. This role also works collaboratively with the Associate Director, ISS regarding all incidents and behavior related issues and reports while ensuring community standards and guidelines are adhered to.
- Liaises with the Associate Director, ISS on various community events and student involvement, supporting a strong connection between occupants within all housing buildings.
- Liaises with various Indigenous community services to create a network of local supports for students.
- Liaises with Aboriginal Resource Centre staff to ensure student success both academically and personally, and attends regular Indigenous Services meetings.
- Coordinates services for students to meet their needs, involving other departments including the Aboriginal Resource Centre services, Student Services, Security Services.
- Develops and fosters individual peer support between various students who need mentoring.
- Consults with and make recommendations to Associate Director, ISS and the Manager, Indigenous Initiatives and Inclusion regarding issues that affect Indigenous student success and retention.
- Builds and fosters relationships within the entire Housing community.
- Helps prepare students for the transition from Nahoonai-a to campus housing. Join existing professional housing associations on the advice of the Associate Director, ISS.
- Fosters Indigenous community engagement in Nahoonai-a by inviting in Elders, Knowledge Holders, and Advisors to visit with and support students on specific topics.
- Assist students by informing and linking them to appropriate community resources available for their student success and development.
- Participates in committees and meetings as required.
- Ensures student confidentiality.
Skills & Qualifications
- Relevant post-secondary education in Adult Education, Counselling, or Human Services; all educational paths will be honoured.
- Minimum three years’ experience working with Indigenous youth; previous work within a post-secondary field an asset.
- Equivalent combination of education and lived-experience may be considered.
- Lived knowledge of the kinds of experiences Indigenous students bring to the College including understanding of history and awareness of walking in two worlds.
- Understanding and experience working with Indigenous communities within the region and awareness of First Nations protocols.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent student experience and institutional integrity.
- General knowledge of personal, social, and educational challenges encountered by post-secondary students.
- Must understand and have awareness of leaning into trauma and compassion informed practice.
- Demonstrated advocacy, able to problem-solve institutional and community barriers with and for Indigenous students.
- Current knowledge of post-secondary housing issues and a desire to engage with other housing professionals.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally.
- Knowledge of computerized systems appropriate to administrative and operational services, including Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility.
- A willingness to learn and ask for help.
