General Machinist
Position Overview
Peterson Machine & Supply Inc. is seeking an experienced General Machinist to join our team. This position combines precision machining along with industrial field service work, supporting customers throughout Northwestern Ontario in the mining, forestry, pulp and paper, and industrial sectors.
From time to time, this position will also support field service work, including equipment repairs, shutdowns, and on-site machining. The ideal candidate takes pride in producing high-quality work, solving mechanical problems, and contributing to a team that delivers exceptional service.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate conventional manual lathes, milling machines, boring mills, drill presses, and other shop equipment.
- Machine new components and repair existing parts to customer drawings, specifications, or field measurements.
- Perform precision measurements using micrometers, dial indicators, and other inspection equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Work closely with welders, fabricators, and other trades to complete assemblies and repairs.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, quality control, and housekeeping.
- Troubleshoot machining and mechanical issues to develop practical repair solutions.
- Assist with field machining, equipment repairs, and scheduled shutdown work as required.
- Support repairs to pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, crushers, hydraulic systems, and other industrial equipment.
- Complete job documentation and maintain a safe work environment in accordance with company and customer requirements.
- Mentor apprentices and support the development of junior team members.
Qualifications
- Red Seal General Machinist Certificate of Qualification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of machining experience in an industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of conventional machining practices and precision measuring equipment.
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
- Experience in mining, forestry, pulp and paper, or heavy industry is considered an asset.
- CWB welding certification, or willingness to obtain certification, is considered an asset.
- Underground Common Core is considered an asset.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for customer field work and shutdowns.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
