GMB Heavy Industries, established in 1981, is a manufacturing company, which provides Engineering, Equipment Supply, Installation and Service to the Steel Industry. GMB has a varied, multidiscipline team of design engineers capable of providing custom, engineered solutions for its customers’ specific problems. GMB has an immediate opening for a Junior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its dynamic and growing team.
The successful candidate will bring strong heavy machinery design experience, proven capability, and the ability to communicate complex engineering solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare detailed design calculations and analysis of mechanical equipment for the Steel Industry.
- Work in conjunction/collaborate with other GMB Engineers/designers on projects
- Create 3D part and assembly models in SolidWorks
- Prepare detail part drawings, assembly drawings and Bills of Material
- Prepare conceptual designs/sketches and preliminary BOMs to be used to quote cost of projects.
- Receive training in the use of Leica Laser Tracker which is used to conduct surveys of equipment as well as the installation of equipment.
- Be a member of a small team that conducts 1 to 2 day onsite surveys at a customer’s facility (2 to 4 surveys annually)
- Prepare Survey report, with support of colleagues.
- Support the installation team but using the Leica Laser Tracker to help align equipment being installed in the field during an outage (7-10day outages, approximately 2 to 3 times annually)
- Provide on-site technical support during major machinery installations.
- Provide support to the sales team when visiting customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must offer the following:
- B.SC OR B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering,
- 1 to 4 years’ experience in the design of Steel Mill and/or Steel Coil Processing equipment and/or heavy industrial machinery design (i.e. mining).
- Knowledge of the design, fabrication, and installation of heavy mechanical equipment.
- Proficient in the use of 3D Cad design software (preferably Solid Works).
- Strong computer-oriented skills (familiarity with AutoCAD, MS Office, FEA Analysis, MathCAD, etc.)
- Strong communication skills, verbal and written.
- Must demonstrate the ability to analyze problems, and provide solutions using sound judgment and decision-making skills.
- Must be self-motivated, able to work independently as well as within a team setting.
- Must hold a valid passport, as there will be travel to the U.S.A., as well as within Canada.
