Child Care Cook Description
The Child Care Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks to children in a child care setting. This role ensures that all meals meet dietary guidelines and accommodate any allergies or special dietary needs. The Child Care Cook maintains a clean and organized kitchen and follows all food safety regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Plan menus that meet nutritional guidelines and dietary requirements of children.
- Prepare and cook meals/snacks according to established recipes and portion sizes.
- Ensure all meals are served on time and in an appealing manner.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen, including all cooking utensils and equipment.
- Order and manage food supplies, ensuring fresh and adequate inventory.
- Adhere to food safety and sanitation guidelines to prevent contamination.
- Accommodate special dietary needs and allergies of children.
- Keep accurate records of meals served and inventory used.
- Collaborate with child care staff to ensure meal times run smoothly.
- Engage with children during meal times to encourage healthy eating habits.
- Maintain supply of materials required for cooking and eating, ordering more as needed
- Follow direction of Centre Director/Supervisor in regards to nutrition, budgeting, meal-times, and cleanliness tasks
Qualifications:
Required Skills and Experience:
· A love for children and a strong desire to make a difference every day
· Familiarity with proper conditions and food storage, the ability to understand the needs of children with food allergies, and to implement methods of food cross-contamination avoidance.
· Ability to follow nutritious menus and prepare sufficient quantity of foods for centre population
· Possess a Safe Food Handler’s Certificate or willingness to obtain
· At least one year of food preparation and cooking experience
· Experience working with children is highly desirable
· Must be physically able to use the computer with basic proficiency and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds is strongly desired and may be required to work in some classrooms or in the kitchen.
