We are seeking multiple compassionate, experienced, and reliable Caregiver(s) (Personal Support Worker) to provide in-home care for a client in his seventies with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The ideal candidates will have specialized experience or training in neurodegenerative conditions and be skilled in delivering personal care, emotional support, and assistance with daily living activities while promoting dignity and independence.
This is a non live-in position in Enderby, BC. The support worker(s) will work closely with the client and their family to ensure a safe, comfortable, and supportive home environment.
The client enjoys watching TV shows and current affairs. Used to be into camping, snowmobiling, quadding, fishing. Loved the outdoors. Built his own house, enjoyed fixing things. He was a welder and used to work on projects in his shop. Ea. restored a 1950s tractor, built a ‘go-kart’ out of an old ride on lawnmower.
Location:
- Enderby (near Gunter Ellison Rd)
Available Shifts:
Weekend shifts / Evening shifts / 20 – 30 hours per week
- Monday to Sunday: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Or
- Monday to Sunday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
- Monday to Sunday: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Compensation:
- $26 per hour starting wage
Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:
- Assist with bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, dressing, and toileting.
- Driving: accompanied travel and assistance for errands and appointments (as needed, limited)
- Assist with feeding, ensuring safe swallowing techniques are followed.
- Support with mobility, transfers, and positioning using proper lifting techniques and equipment (e.g., Hoyer lift, ceiling lift, electric wheelchair).
- Condom Catheter care (when needed for long outings) and emptying catheter.
- Assistance with stretches and physiotherapy.
- Provide companionship, conversation, and emotional reassurance.
- Encourage participation in light recreational or cognitive activities as able.
- Perform light cleaning related to client care (e.g., laundry, dishwashing, tidying care areas).
Requirements:
- Care Aid Certificate preferred (similar education or a combination of education and experience)
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred
- Class 5 Driver’s License and reliable vehicle to get to work (transit not an option)
- Experience working with clients with ALS, MS, or other progressive neurological conditions is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of safe transfer techniques and experience with mobility aids.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to care.
- Ability to work independently and follow care plans.
- Clear Criminal Record Check.
- Must be comfortable working in an environment with a dog.
- No smoking or vaping.
- No perfumes or strong scents
- Must be able to communicate competently in English, in oral and written form and understand written and oral instructions
- Must be fully vaccinated (2x covid shot, and yearly flu shot)
