Elementary Teacher
The Village Schoolhouse | Cambridge, Ontario
Full Time | September 2026
Some teachers are looking for a classroom to teach in.
Others are looking for a place where they can help build something meaningful. At The Village Schoolhouse, we're looking for educators who are passionate about their craft and excited by the idea that teaching is never finished. We're a team that loves asking questions, exploring new ideas, challenging our thinking, and continually refining how we create meaningful learning experiences for children.
We believe the best teachers never finish learning, combining strong instructional practice with curiosity, reflection, and a commitment to continual growth. Rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we believe children’s curiosity should guide learning, strong relationships are at the heart of great education, and teachers are researchers, collaborators, and lifelong learners.
As our school continues to grow, we're looking for a passionate educator to join our elementary team. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to contribute, create, and continually grow alongside a collaborative group of educators who believe education can be something extraordinary.
About the Role
You’ll work with elementary-aged learners within our multi-age learning community, creating responsive learning experiences that build strong academic foundations while adapting instruction to how each student learns best. Whether through explicit small group instruction, collaborative projects, peer teaching, independent practice, or hands-on exploration, you know how to create the conditions where every child can thrive.
You’ll have the opportunity to help shape curriculum, learning environments, and school initiatives alongside a collaborative team. We value educators who can thoughtfully adapt instruction, solve problems creatively, and make decisions that reflect our shared values while remaining responsive to the needs of individual learners.
Who Thrives Here
You'll likely love working here if you:
- Are passionate about teaching, continually refining your practice through research, reflection, and professional learning.
- Are highly observant and use children’s thinking, behaviour, questions, and interactions to inform instructional decisions.
- Love extending learning through projects, nature, literacy, STEM, art, documentation, and authentic experiences.
- Can confidently make instructional decisions in the moment, knowing when to teach explicitly, when to facilitate exploration, when to challenge, and when to step back.
- Enjoy creating beautiful, engaging learning environments that invite curiosity and exploration.
- Take initiative, contribute ideas, and enjoy improving the learning experience for students and colleagues alike.
- Communicate openly and regularly with families because you see parents as true partners in learning.
- Believe every child is capable of meaningful growth and hold high expectations while providing the support each learner needs to succeed.
- Create classrooms where children feel genuinely known, understood, challenged, and valued.
- Balance thoughtful independent decision-making with strong collaboration and shared responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Design engaging, inquiry driven learning experiences for elementary-aged students.
- Support literacy, numeracy, science, social studies, and interdisciplinary projects through authentic learning experiences.
- Observe, document, and respond to children's thinking to inform future planning.
- Use ongoing assessment to identify opportunities for greater challenge, monitor student growth, and address foundational gaps.
- Differentiate instruction using a variety of evidence-based teaching approaches.
- Foster a classroom culture built on belonging, responsibility, confidence, and independence.
- Support students in becoming reflective, capable, and self-directed learners.
- Extend learning outdoors through regular nature exploration and community experiences.
- Build strong relationships with families through regular communication and documentation of student learning.
- Participate in ongoing professional learning, educational research, mentoring, and collaborative planning.
- Collaborate with colleagues to co-design curriculum, refine instructional practices, and continually strengthen our programs and school culture.
Required
- Minimum 3 years experience teaching elementary-aged children in a classroom or educational setting.
- Strong understanding of early numeracy development and mathematical reasoning.
- Demonstrated experience delivering structured literacy instruction using an evidence-based approach (UFLI, Sounds-Write, Orton-Gillingham, Secret Stories, Heggerty, Wilson, etc.).
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment where educators help shape school-wide decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to reflect on your practice, adapt instruction, and continually improve student outcomes.
Assets
- Ontario College of Teachers certification
- A degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Studies, or a related field
- Experience with Reggio Emilia, inquiry learning, Montessori, Forest School, project based learning, or similar child-centred approaches.
- Experience using assessment data to identify learning gaps and plan targeted intervention.
- Experience designing or implementing individualized literacy or numeracy supports.
The Right Fit
We’re looking for experienced educators who combine strong instructional knowledge with curiosity and humility. We value teachers who know how to teach literacy and numeracy exceptionally well, who continually refine their practice, and are excited to learn alongside a collaborative team. Experience matters here, but so does the willingness to reflect, adapt, and keep growing.
The strongest candidates are skilled at recognizing both a student’s strengths and their next steps for growth. They know when to deepen learning by building on a child’s strengths, interests, and natural curiosity, and when targeted support is needed to strengthen the foundational skills that underpin future learning. Rather than teaching every child the same way, they make thoughtful instructional decisions that help every learner continue making meaningful progress.
Why Join The Village Schoolhouse
You'll join a school that believes teachers deserve the same opportunities for growth that we provide our students.
We invest in professional learning, collaborative planning, and giving educators the autonomy to innovate. Your ideas won't simply be welcomed. They'll help shape the future of our classrooms and our school.
If you’re looking for a place where thoughtful teaching, meaningful relationships, and continual growth are valued, we’d love to meet you.
