About this team
We are a 26-bed surgical oncology unit providing post-operative care to patients who have undergone GI, breast, or urology surgery. Admissions to our unit come via our Emergency Department, ICU, and PACU teams. Typical patient ratios for nurses on our team are 4:1 on days and 6:1 on nights. The patient population is predominantly surgical oncology (including retroperitoneal, pelvic, visceral, sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer), although we also see patients from general surgery, palliative care, and inflammatory bowel disease.
In this role you will:
- Provide direct patient and family centered care for Surgical Oncology patients
- Complete physical assessments on patients
- Provide direct patient care in accordance to the CNO standards and Sinai Health's policy and procedures
- Administer medications and provide any necessary care (including, but not limited to wound care, IVs, monitoring drains, prepare patients for procedures, etc.)
- Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
- Apply a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, chest tubes, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blues, and chemotherapy
- Participate in the mentoring of learners, peers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
