Hostmost Marine Services is a leading marine communications and navigation service provider, with depots and service teams in Canada, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore.
To better support our customers in Canada and the Americas, we are expanding our technical service coverage in Ontario and the Great Lakes region. We are looking for a motivated Junior / Trainee Marine Electronics Technician who is interested in building a long-term technical career in the marine industry.
This is a field-based / on-the-road role supporting vessels, ports, shipyards, customer sites, training, and field service activities across Ontario and the Great Lakes region. Candidates based in Hamilton, the Greater Toronto Area, Niagara, or Southwestern Ontario are encouraged to apply.
POSITION SUMMARY
This is an entry-to-intermediate level technical role for someone with a background in electronics, electrical systems, automation, instrumentation, radio communications, telecom, marine engineering, or a related field.
The successful candidate will receive training and mentorship in marine navigation and communication systems, including radar, ECDIS, gyrocompass, autopilot, GMDSS, VHF/MF/HF radio, AIS, BNWAS, VDR, speed log, satcom, and related bridge electronics.
The ideal candidate does not need to have full marine electronics experience on day one. However, they must be reliable, organized, safety-conscious, hands-on, and eager to learn.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with service, installation, troubleshooting, inspection, and commissioning of marine communication and navigation equipment.
- Support senior technicians during vessel attendances, shipyard work, customer visits, and technical inspections.
- Learn to diagnose electrical, electronic, cabling, interface, network, and communication issues.
- Read and follow OEM manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, and internal work instructions.
- Prepare job notes, photos, parts lists, and draft service reports.
- Keep service coordinators and internal teams updated on job progress.
- Maintain tools, test equipment, safety gear, and technical documentation.
- Participate in internal and manufacturer training.
- Follow company safety procedures, vessel safety requirements, and customer site rules.
- Travel to ports, vessels, shipyards, and customer sites as required.
- Gradually develop the ability to complete service work independently.
REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma, certificate, apprenticeship, degree, or hands-on experience in electronics, electrical systems, automation, instrumentation, radio communications, telecom, marine engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong interest in marine electronics, shipboard systems, or field-service work.
- Basic understanding of electrical/electronic troubleshooting.
- Ability to read or learn to read wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and service instructions.
- Comfortable using or learning to use basic test equipment such as multimeters.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to document work carefully.
- Reliable, organized, and able to follow instructions.
- Good communication skills and willingness to ask questions when needed.
- Strong computer literacy, including MS Office and Outlook.
- Good English communication skills, both oral and written.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to ports, shipyards, vessels, and customer sites.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in marine, industrial, automation, aviation, military, telecom, radio, electrical, or field-service environments.
- Experience with low-voltage systems, cabling, soldering, terminations, networking, or instrumentation.
- Familiarity with NMEA, serial communication, Ethernet, Modbus, CAN bus, or similar communication protocols is an asset.
- Experience working with vessels, shipyards, or industrial customers is an asset.
- Ability to speak additional languages is an asset.
