Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and oversee sterile and non-sterile compounded medications in accordance with NAPRA standards and applicable regulations
- Ensure all compounding activities comply with provincial pharmacy regulations, quality assurance programs, and pharmacy policies.
- Verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and patient safety.
- Maintain accurate compounding records, formulas, batch documentation, and quality control procedures.
- Monitor and maintain compounding equipment, facilities, and environmental controls.
- Provide professional consultation and support to physicians, healthcare providers, and patients.1
- Assist in developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Participate in audits, inspections, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Train and mentor pharmacy technicians and support staff involved in compounding activities.
- Stay current with evolving compounding regulations, best practices, and industry standards.q2w1
- Weigh, measure, and mix raw powders, liquids, and chemicals to create custom dosages (e.g., creams, capsules, liquids).
- Double-check pharmaceutical math, inspect raw materials for expiry, and run quality checks on finished batches.
- Clean, sterilize, and calibrate compounding equipment, work surfaces, and cleanrooms.
- Record all compounding steps, lot numbers, expiration dates, and preparation logs with extreme accuracy.
- Stock, rotate, track, and order lab consumables and chemicals to prevent shortages
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BScPhm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
- Licensed and in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
- Strong working knowledge of NAPRA Model Standards for Pharmacy Compounding.
- Experience with sterile and/or non-sterile compounding.
- Knowledge of USP standards and quality assurance principles is considered an asset.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Technical Skills: Established proficiency with compounding equipment (balances, mortars/pestles, ointment mills), compounding software, and dispensing systems like Kroll.
- Soft Skills: Meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and an exceptionally high level of personal accountability
