The Regional Independent Students Association (RISA) was established in 1993. RISA's mission is to address the unique needs of youth who are at increased risk of not completing their education. We strive to meet these needs through the operation of two fully staffed youth residences which provide a positive, secure living environment for at-risk youth between the ages of 16 and 24 years old. Edwards House houses six youth identifying as male and Brockwell House houses eight youth identifying as female. Both houses are staffed by trained youth care workers who provide 24-hour support and supervision.
We provide our youth residents with something that many of them have never known – a safe, supportive living environment that allows them to focus on their education & workplace skills. Instead of worrying about supporting themselves independently, the youth can direct their energy toward their education and planning for the future.
In addition to providing youth with an opportunity to focus on their education & workplace skills, we place a strong emphasis on the development of important life skills. By participating in meal preparation, chores, and other household activities, youth will be better prepared to make the transition to adult / independent living. Similarly, through adherence to reasonable curfews, behavioural regulations, mandatory study periods and summer job searches, they develop time management skills and a sense of personal responsibility.
We are looking for a committed, adaptable, and resilient Youth Care Worker to provide support for our youth. The Individual hired to do the summer position will be responsible for teaching the youth life skills - cooking, cleaning, proper hygiene, communication skills, etc. They will be responsible for monitoring and counselling the youth, enforcing rules & regulations and communication & log book writing. The day to day work is varied and will include but not limited to one-on-one relationship building, planning and participating in appointments and meetings, counselling, crisis management, while also creating and maintaining a home environment for the youth who live with us.
The successful applicant must be emotionally self-aware, confident, energetic, adaptable, patient, empathetic, reliable, motivated and able to safely intervene in crisis situations. Also, the successful applicant must be able to work independently and be under the age of 30 as dictated by the regulations set forth by Canada Summer Jobs.
The individual hired must be available to work days, evenings and weekends. Shifts will be 7 hour shifts starting as early as 8:30am and ending as late as 11:00pm.
There is the possibility of employment once the summer placement is complete.
