Job Summary:
ODI is seeking an experienced Mechatronics Engineer to support and or lead mechanical and custom automation engineering projects. The engineer is responsible for overseeing the quoting, design, testing, implementation, and optimization of mechanical and electromechanical systems within ODI and for ODI’s customers. The engineer will coordinate closely with cross-functional teams—including customers, other engineers and global manufacturing sites—to resolve equipment issues, triage and drive production support tickets to closure, improve custom automation equipment currently in use at ODI and design and develop custom automation solutions for ODI’s customers. The role demands strong automation, process, manufacturing, project management, leadership, and a strategic mindset aligned with inventive principles and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Interaction: Collaborate with internal and external clients to understand their needs, provide technical expertise, and ensure solutions align with their operational goals.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, and project managers, to deliver cohesive automation systems.
- Design and Development: Create integrated automation assemblies, integrating mechanical, electrical, control system, and software components, to meet client specifications and project requirements. Control systems and software development can be outsourced to internal controls engineering or software development.
- Prototyping and Testing: Build and test prototypes, analyze performance data, and iterate designs to ensure reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards.
- Programming and Control: Develop and implement control algorithms, HMI interfaces, and PLC programming (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text) for automation systems if needed, or create requirements for programming and control to be outsourced.
- Documentation: Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for manufacturing, assembly, operation, and maintenance of custom automation systems.
- Project Management: Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources, ensuring on-time delivery of automation solutions while meeting quality standards.
- Compliance: Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years in a custom automation development role.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in collaborating with clients, gathering technical requirements and delivering tailored automation solutions.
- Minimum 3 years of experience working with cross-functional teams, including software developers, controls engineers, and or mechanical and electrical engineers.
Required Technical Skills:
- CAD modelling and PDM expertise (SolidWorks, Inventor or other experience required)
- Familiarity with pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, vision, sensing and control devices.
- Demonstrated ability to assess and mitigate technical and project risks.
- Hands-on experience building and testing prototypes for automation systems, including iterative design improvements based on performance data analysis.
- Familiarity with testing methodologies to ensure system reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards
- Creating detailed requirements for outsourced programming tasks.
- Proficiency in creating clear, standards-compliant documentation to support manufacturing, assembly, and end-user operation using documentation tools (SolidWorks, Microsoft Office) to produce professional-grade technical specifications.
- Proven ability to deliver projects on time and within budget while maintaining client satisfaction.
- Experience with finding, developing and coordinating project completion with outside vendors.
Additional Technical Skills:
- Experience developing control algorithms, HMI interfaces, or PLC programming
- Creating detailed requirements for outsourced programming tasks.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., ProfiNet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT) for system integration.
- Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies to enhance automation efficiency.
- Knowledge of manufacturing quoting and shop cost structures
- Structural analysis and FEA experience

- Language: Fluent in English (verbal and written). Spanish language skills a plus.
Preferred Certifications:
- Bachelors of Engineering or higher-level Engineering degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering
Travel and Relocation
- Candidate must be willing to travel when required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform equipment tests in a factory environment.

Pay: $75,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
