Position Overview
We are seeking an Assistant Controller to support the Controller in managing the day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting across multiple projects and entities.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional who thrives in a project-based environment and enjoys partnering with operations, project managers, and leadership to deliver accurate, timely financial insights.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting, including preparation of financial statements
Lead or support month-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analysis
Ensure accuracy and completeness of general ledger activity
Accounting Operations
Assist in managing day-to-day accounting operations including cash management, accounts payable, loan management, job costing, and payroll
Review journal entries, accruals, invoices, and contracts to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies
Prepare bi-weekly payroll, ensuring process timelines are met
Maintain HR records and assist with benefits administration
Ensure compliance with GAAP/ASPE and applicable tax regulations
Support and mentor other accounting staff
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting processes
Provide insights on financial performance, cash flow, and cost control
Analyze variances and recommend improvements to management
Year-end Compliance
Coordinate and support annual external review and compilation engagements, including preparation of working papers, schedules, and supporting documentation
Ensure compliance with tax filings, lender reporting, and other statutory reporting requirements
Process Improvement & Systems
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, workflow efficiency, and reporting
Assist in the development and documentation of standard operating procedures for various accounting and payroll functions
Support ERP/accounting system enhancements and automation initiatives
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA designation (Preferred, but not required)
5+ years of progressive accounting experience
Construction, real estate, or development industry experience an asset
Experience with ERP/accounting systems
Advanced Excel skills
Proven ability to manage priorities in a deadline-driven environment
